    Heatsink question

I have an asus av8 deluxe mobo with some basic water cooling. I have decided to go back to air. However i no longer have the cpu mounting bit (the black plastic square). Instead i have 4 bolts going through the mobo.

Now my question, what heatsink can i buy that i can mount using these 4 bolts?

    Thanks

Zalmans CNPS9500 LED HSF comes with retention parts for most modern CPUs. Zalman's Website. Would something like that do?

That HSF is probibly the best air cooler on the market too.

Thats what i would like to use, or the xp 120, however the black square mounting section is not on my mobo. And if possible i dont want to have to take the mobo out to install a new one. So any other ideas?

I presume that mounting plate is standard on all 939 boards? Part of the specification probably.

SO find a cheap/broken 939 mobo and remove it's mount and put it on yours.

The Scythe Ninja Plus is a cracking HSF and comes with all the necessary bits to install it (including a new retention bracket).

The Scythe nijas are indeed very good, and well worth the money, they cool well and are very quiet according to my friend that has one, could be a bit tricky to install not the easiest to install.
The xp120 or xp90 would also be cracking choices they work very well, but u will need to buy a separate fan for them.

From what I've read, the XP120 is more difficult to install than the Ninja as the retention clips are so stiff. Many reports of bum-clenchingly worrying attempts to install / remove.

The only thing I can snag the Ninja for is that you need to install or remove with the mobo out of the case. No way you could do it with the mobo in-situ.

Just use the butt end of a screwdriver, works a charm, for me anyway.

Nah, it's fine - the only issue with the XP120 is that that on some mobos they interfere with captacitors when you're installing (you install it 'diagonally' if you see what I mean), and usually the capacitors get in the way, but nothing is ever under pressure. You just need to take your time and make sure things are lined up - all assuming it fits your motherboard in the first place anyway.

The advantage the XP120 is that it's really, really light, so there's no worries like you sometimes get in large copper-based heatsinks if you are travelling, or moving it around the house or something, putting pressure on the area around the CPU socket.

IIRC it also comes with it's own retention bracket, so you don't need the original - if socket 939 anyway.

That said, I wouldn't mind giving the Ninja a go sometime... it at least looks mighty impressive.

Performance is pretty damn good too. It's pretty light, and most of the weight is at the base of the HS. The heatpipe set up means that it will perform properly regardless of the motherboard orientation (desktop, ATX, BTX).

The fins are pretty well spaced out too - this is to allow it to run passively (for the real silence freaks ) It actually performs pretty well in a passive set-up too.

One more vote for the Ninja.
A lot lighter than it looks...and cools damn well too...especially in me P180

Having said that, you wouldn't go wrong with an SI-120 either.

The SI-120 has less compatability issues than the XP-120 i think.
