GFX card expert tools memory speed reading

    Hi,

My mate got a 512Mb Gainward 7900GT last week, when looking at the memory clock settings in Expert Tools the memory speed is only showing as 700MHz and not the 1400MHz he expected it to show.

Does anyone know if this is normal or could it be a duff card?

I think thats normal, modern GFx cards use DDR/DDR2(/GDDR3? heard something about that).

The DDR stands for Double Data Rate, so 700Mhz RAM has an effective speed of 1.4Ghz, so i think all is well with your mates card

    Hi,

The card in question uses GDDR3, we were a little puzzled by it just showing 700MHz as the card he's just sold (Gainward 7800GS SILENT AGP) from his older system was showing 1200MHz in Expert Tools.

There is no 1200Mhz memory out there yet so it is definitely 600Mhz (real)

My 7900GT's memory runs at 840Mhz though...

Maybe it was just an old verison of Expert Tool on his old system showing 1200MHz, I know it would have only been 600MHz real he just started to panic based on the old card showing 1200MHz and the new card in the new system but with the newer Expert Tools only showing 700MHz.

My system is still in bits so I couldn't even check mine to say either way and put his mind at rest.
