Help to quiet down my computer

I have slowly updated my pc over the years . Noise level was never a concern to me ( you don’t really notice it when play game with sound on). But now I mainly use my computer for work . The Noise level that my pc produce is just so unbearable. At moment I am running the pc with out the case fans ( all 7 of them ) but the noise level hasn't been changed at all.

Could any body suggest any thing that may help to quiet it down ?

P.s I have also tried use riva turner thing on the graphic card as well.

Forget to mention that I got a Antec True Power 480 ( the Old Version)

well theres lots you can do, ar eyou willing to spend any money??
If yes then have a look at: PC noise insulating foam
New quieter CPU fan, ie a Zalman
New quieter GPU fan, ie Arctic cooler
Fan controler etc
Most of these are availible and other surgestions from www.silentpc.com
Can you isolate where the worst noise is comming from??

Is it fan noise that's your main worry? (This could come from the chipset fan on the motherboard, the graphics card fan, or the cpu fan).
Or is the hard drives? Or both?
Should be able to sort you out, once we know what the main offenders are.

I believe the case can have a large effect, even though it has no moving parts. If it's a badly designed case, then sounds can reverberate through it and sometimes make things sound louder than they actually are. I once didn't quite screw my case back together as tightly as I should have and that had a huge effect also.

I got a fanless main board so there isn't a chip set fan in sight . at moment only the psu , cpu and the video card has fans on it and I suspect that it is my power supply that makes the most of noise. How does the new psu compare to mine old Antec Psu ?

I am planing to get the seasonic s12 500w any way sinice my old power supply doesn't have the new plug for the main board.
Is the seasonic much quieter then mine one ( antec true power 480 Blue rev1).

First thing is to try a software solution, before spending money.

Download rivatuner and speedfan.

Use rivatuner to reduce the fan speed of your video card when in 2d mode to less than 40%.

Use speedfan to adjust cpu/PSU fans if possible.

Thanks for the advice . I have used rivaturner and it does helps alot , as for speed fan I have used it but you can't really hear my CPU fan ( just got a zelman copper flower blower) .

You may want to try sticking a pen or something (non-conductive) in your PSU to stop the fan while the PSU is off, and then turning it on, although only for a very short while, to see if it is indeed the PSU.
If this does turn out to be the problem, then we can work on getting you a new PSU

Hi amjedm I got the Thermaltake Xaser 3 case . But i am planing to change it soon.

I can recommend the Seasonic - I recently got the S12-600 and it is even quieter than the Antec TruePower 380S that came in my Antec Sonata case (the 380S was a special model with one fan, supposed to be quieter than the TP380).

I think *decent* PSU makers have been concentrating on making more efficient models in the last couple of years - that should mean the PSUs produce less heat, therefore less noisy fans are needed.

I thought you might have a Thermaltake because of the 7 fans.

I have a Aluminium case with six 80mm fans - it's not used at the moment as I have an Akasa Eclipse and P180 to play with. The six fans on full speed sounded like a helicopter so I know the noise level you may have had to put up with.

Any ideas on what you want to replace it with? The P180 and Akasa are very good cases - if you're thinking of going for a high end case again. Low end the Antec SLK3000 is a decent case. All these cases have 120mm fans.

That case is the 1st expensive computer things that I brought along with the PSU which is more than 3 years ago).

I was think about getting the P180 , I heard lots of good things about it . But I won't able to get it for a while yet. ( can't hide it from other half ) . I just ordered the seasonic s12-500 power supply today ( manage to get my boss to buy something as well thus save money on the delivery fee). I was going to try the pen thing , but figured that I will need to change the power supply any way (my mainBoard has a 24 pin connecter but the power supply got the old 20 pin one).

I have an Antec SLK3700BQE, which is a quietened version of the SLK3700. It was about £45 including a PSU and is a reasonably quiet base for my system (but the noisy-ish Gigabyte G-Power Pro ruins it...). Once I upgrade to s939/AM2/Conroe, I'll get a quieter HSF and everything'll be peachy!

i find that one of the noisiest bits on my PC was the northbridge fan, look at gettign a zalman heatsink. well worth it
