    Question DVI *&Audio* to HDMI?

Has anyone used some sort of a cable to get video and audio into an HDMI port? I know you can get DVI-I to HDMI and I know rgaphics cards are going to come out with the SPDIF connector on the gfx board to allow proper HDMI inc. audio, but for the rest of us with older systems is there perhaps a way to get SPDIF-out and DVI into an HDMI link without an extra processor to interleave it or something?

I doubt it, any device that did that would probably not be cost effective as you would need some funky processing plus a HDCP chip.....most boxes with that circuitry are in the 150-200ukp price range and I doubt many would be interested in such a gadget as most people would just run the optical cable to their amp.

The ones currently on sale take VGA + stereo sound to HDMI.

this also would be do-able...? don't happen to have a link handy do you?

My dvd player was having trouble with an amazon rental disc so I decided to use my semi-htpc'ed PC. The VGA connection (tv has vga in as well as hdmi...) gave me an image onscreen that was boxed into a normal 4:3 shape (16:9 tv though) and asking for 720p (which is what the tv is ... that or 13xx by 768) resulted in a 4:3 image that was rather, um, green...I got it playing via the rca out from the dongle fitted to my ati aiw card in the end and took stereo from the audio out to the appropriate phono audio in ... this tv has a lot of inputs!

hmmm ... so there's some processing required to mix in the video and audio signals for hdmi ... they don't just run along different wires on the hdmi cabling?

might just have to wait for these graphics cartds with SPDIF inputs and HDMI/HDCP outputs to appear :| ...that or just remind myself that svideo is probably perfectly fine for DVD quality links!

I haven't seen such a thing - for me I bought a cheap DVI->HDMI from scan and hooked it to my plasma. Had to then use a 3.5mm -> Phono and put this thru a SCART converter to get sound through. You checked you TV manual to see if the HDMI can allow sound through a matching analogue input ? (by matching I mean for that input, my tv has input 3 as a SCART, or Composite, or component or HDMI - for sound on HDMI I can select digital (HDMI) or analogue (thru SCART)).

The HDMI 'sound pins' will carry either PCM or one of the new sound formats, the later would require a decoder that doesn't yet exist.

good plan - I will unearth the manual as this sort of thing where AV3 can be one of many inputs kind of rings a bell
