    Conroe price difference ($)US / (£)UK

    I know that it's not officially released, but there's been pricing floating around the net. From what I've noticed there seems to be a large margin in difference between pricing for the same components. I'm used to getting the bad end of the deal comparing to our american counterparts, UK taxes usually account for that;
But look at the differences ! especially for E6600, E6700 (likely to be the most-popular)

    Anandtech $ prices from http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets...spx?i=2795&p=2
    Intel Core 2 Extreme X6800 2.93GHz 4MB £543.76 ($999)
    Intel Core 2 Duo E6700 2.66GHz 4MB £288 ($530)
    Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 2.40GHz 4MB £172.00 ($316)
    Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 2.13GHz 2MB £121.92 ($224)
    Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 1.86GHz 2MB £99.61 ($183)

    Overclockers.co.uk £ prices (inc vat)

    Intel Core 2 Extreme X6800 2.93GHz 4MB £782.55
    Intel Core 2 Duo E6700 2.66GHz 4MB £411.19
    Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 2.40GHz 4MB £252.57
    Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 2.13GHz 2MB £182.07
    Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 1.86GHz 2MB £152.69

These prices are likely to be quite accurate since we are less than two weeks away from consumer launch, can anyone tell me WHY they are so different ? At this rate i might as well get mine shipped from the states.

Only people stupid enough will go and pre-order Conroe. Just order from scan on the day of release and you'll get the CPU the same day as people who pre-ordered it.

The UK prices will have VAT added - sales tax in the US depends on the state your are in (I think) and hasn't been added - that and the fact that OCUK are a ripoff. Have a look at Kompletts prices.

I do not think that is a fair price 172£ + 17.5 Vat means = 200£ komplet is selling for 215 while OCUK is selling for 252£. I think komplett must have bought more than them for selling Conroes for that price. So komplett prices are fair enough to any student like me

Yeh overclockers not competitive on cpu's at the moment, prices seem high, pre-ordering is a complete waste of time, let marketing hype die down.

I'm going to the states in August, and want an X6800 anyway. Are there any compatibility problems with one I buy over there? Is it safe for transportation in my hand luggage back again (scans?), and is the voltage alright? It just seems bonkers to pay nearly £800 when it could be bought £250 cheaper!!!

Internal components should be fine as specs are worldwide. Its the "outside" stuff that deals with mains, tv etc you have to worry about (PSUs etc). Warranty may not be worldwide so its a risk if it goes wrong.

USA Sales Tax varies from state to state, but is lower than VAT.

Also, don't you have to pay UK import duty over a certain amount? Be prepared just in case. IANAL.

Yes you do IF they search your luggage and found something expensive If they don't find it they don't charge it. I used to bring a whole set of computer (exc monitor/case) back to UK everytime I go back to Hong Kong. Depends on which airport you arrive some are very loose and wouldn't check at all.
