    Question DVD drive troubles

    does anyone have an idea why my brothers DVD drive, which used to work fine and dandy, now will only read and write at around 1.7x, using the same disks that uesd to work perfectly well

    he has a dell dimension 5150 if that has anything to do with it...

    Could be that the IDE transfer mode has slipped down to PIO mode? Check in device manager?

    Also could possibly be caused by conflict with virtual drive tools like demon tools. Has anything recently been installed?

    The above post could well be spot on - IIRC I had the exact same problem a while ago. It seems that should windows be unable to read a CD/DVD for a certain number of times (You know, when it spins and doesnt tack on) Then it will change the IDE mode to PIO which is really rubbish basically.

    I cant remember how i got around this, as reverting it isnt as simple as you'd think and involved removing this and that from Device manager, but try googling a bit and see what comes up
