Cost Entry Point for Conroe Rather high?

Sure the processors are relatively cheap for intel, but as per usual intel MB are ridiculously expensive, and i'm right in thinking to get the best out of conroe you need PC8500?,

at ~£300 for 2Gig, its a big jump.

So talking £600 for just MB/CPU/Memory?.

Is it me or is this a big set of money.....

On a price value exercise, does a amd64 3000 overclocked to 4000 ish for £300 for the MB/CPU/Memory seem a better idea?.

Or is it the usual pay through the nose to be bleeding edge

It doesn't need PC8500 memory you can go with PC6400 for light overclocking, you only really need PC8500 if your trying to overclock to the max, and a good 2Gb PC6400 kit starts at around £150.

But even with that saving Conroe is expensive given the high motherboard costs do make it more expensive to go Conroe compared to AMD but the cost difference is only £100 at most which is worth it given the performance difference.

With AMD joining in on the DDR2, and Conroe just around the corner, the demand is going to peak soon which will force memory manufacturers to get their act together. It's not like you could get 2GB of DDR for less than £300 4 years ago was it?

It won't be very long at all until DDR2 is cheaper then DDR...

Yup light was probably not the best choice of words I could of used Simply 99.99% of people dont need PC8000/PC8500 just go with PC6400 and save the £150.

PC8000 and 8500 at this moment in time, is a complete wast of money.

tbh Opteron and old fashioned DDR 1 (value as well) makes most things go like bloody lightning on an nForce4.

2 Gigs of Xtreem 3-3-3-8 667mhz easily does DDR1000 and can go higher and it costs £170
