    Completely independant displays question

I need to power two screens, one for playing games on, another that has to run completely independantly - ie, still show a windows background/website etc when playing a game in full screen (not windowed mode) on the first panel - will I need two gfx cards? I don't want the mouse to be able to move 'into' the other window either - thats the jey thing - i know my current card will do 2 screens, but I don't think I can limit the mouse, and it switches off the second panel.

Would I need a second gfx card? possibly in a pci slot?

Have you tried using a program called Ultramon? It adds to the pretty pathetic multi-display options that Windows already has. Makes having dual monitors actually worthwhile.

Can't see why you'd need a second card.

2 cards wont help. if you cant do it in software, why not build up a cheap-as-chips 2nd box to do it - windows + interweb needs naff-all power

nVidias own multi display options should let you do this. Ultramon will give you a second taskbar on the second monitor and add a few other nifty tweaks.

Just plug in the second display into your 7900GT and have a play with nvidia control panel. Games will maximize on the main display and the second screen should be unaffected.

so far when i maximise the second screen switches off!

a second machine is hmmm, i've thought about that, but allready disguarded it as a not suitable option. (May become clear one day) I'll have a play around in the nvidia settings then.

nVidia cards have had the means to do this since even my Ti4200 - I run it in Dualview, this extends the desktop over the 2 screens. When I run a game, it pops up in full screen on my primary monitor, and the other screen sits there as it was.

If the game changes the resolution of the primary monitor, it tends to "bump" the other screen too (the wallpaper changes size).

If anything, the thing I can't do is run many games across the two screens. But running a game on one and the other sat as it was, is how it always works. It's that simple. Anything I have running on the secondary screen keeps running. Desktop, program, whatever. The mouse (in 99% of games) can't leave the game you're playing to affect your second screen. So forget splashing money on a 2nd PC for this and just look at the help files with your 7900GT.

Or send it to me and you can have my Ti4200 in return

Yup, I've never come across a geforce that cant handle dualview. I would be very suprised if the 7900 cant do it.
