I really want to UNDERclock my laptop

It runs boiling hot all the time nowadays, check out these temps:

CPU speed is low, memory usage is low, HD usage is low, so where are the temps coming from?

It must be the hot weather or something, and speedfan doesnt le me control the cpu speed.

The laptop comes with its own fan speed/cpu speed controller but they can only be adjusted together, so dropping the cpu speed also slows the fan down, no use!

Does anyone know of an app that lets me drop CPU speed without lowering fan speed?

Use RMClock or NHC. RMClock has more features but NHC is easier to set up.

Set up a battery saving profile, with a 1.6 Pentium M I think the lowest speedstep is 800MHz.

Undervolt the chip with either of these two utils. Undervolting will also improve battery life.

What laptop is it? If it's a Dell you can use i8kfangui to control the fan manually.

If you want to go further, you could open up the laptop and clean the thermal paste/pad off the CPU and replace with artic silver.

Read and search through Notebookforums.com for your laptop make/model. You may find other solutions.

can this be done with CPU's that don't support speedstep?

I've got a 1GHZ P3 that's almost unusable since the temps cause the damn thing to crash under load.

TBH it sounds like you lappy is full of dust. Pick up a can of compressed air and an antistatic screwdriver at maplin take it apart and clean it out, see what happens. Also check any/all fans are spinning. Either way theres no air getting inside your lappy.

Sony Vaio S3HP

They are known for running hot, but no this hot. Seems like a more recent thing too, before i use to be able to cool it down on the highest fan setting regardless, but now its just always hot.

I think i my laptop may have to be the subject of a little operation then, i'll try to get in it tomorrow.

I have no compressed air (and i hear about this all the time but have yet to ever see it in a shop or at a reasonable price online). i'll see if theres a maplin near me

Sounds like the most likely cause, just hope i can get it back together alright, but i think new laptops are easier to get into

It can be found in a large highstreet computing store (at least here)

Failing that camera shops tend to sell it (though they might not have it on display)... expect to pay a fair bit for it, I've never seen it costing under a tenner! (To be fair, haven't looked that hard either)

Bear in mind it only really works with Pentium Ms and a limited number of P4s.

Forget about undervolting if you've got a Celeron M.

Yup thought so, laptops are mainly passively cooled, dust is bad for passive cooling, you might not need to undervolt it. See how it performs now.

Yeah, its performing a lot better now, temps are about the same as always.

I couldn't get into the fan too well so i could only blow the loose dust away, but theres lots of surface dust coating the heatsink and fan system.

Its ok for now, maybe another day i'll do it properly

this has got me thinking about my laptop. i'll have to do some exploring when i get home i think.
