Recording in game footage - special card?

I know, I know. I have FRAPS already.

Is there some sort of video card that I can buy, which will take the stress of the GPU whilst recording video? Something which is filtered through another card and will make the video recording smoother? Is this possible or do you just need an uber CPU?

Im pretty sure its not smooth cause its do with the storing of what you are recording - which means its the RAM, HDD, and the CPU. MOre ram and a fast HDD like a raptor would probably cut that down.
Im speaking from having used fraps on ingame demos from CS1.6 but then decided to use startmovie 90 (BOI THAT IS SLOW!)
What are you trying to record footage of?

Nothing in general, just an idea going round in my head.

Recording footage isn't too bad, say if I wanted to record a CS:S movie, then it would be ok, but it would knock on the FPS a bit.

I haven't tried with something such as Oblivion, but I really can't see that being easy to record.


I'm guessing storing the video to a seperate HDD would help then. Dual core even better.

Do you need it to be full resolution and frame rate?

If not, how about a non-PC solution? Archos DVR500, camcorder with video in, etc. assuming you can output to a 'tv' of course.
