Hey,
Iam looking for a 5 1/2" drive bay cooler for a sata hard drive, does anyone know of any good quality ones.
Rich
I didn't think many people used those these days with great cases that are also good at keeping things cool.
Scythe do a good one http://www.scythe-usa.com/product/hd...00_detail.html expensive but it works well.
I used in a system I was doing up for a mate. He only really wanted them for looks, but they took out a big chunk of noise too. Never checked the temps though.
I am also looking at hard drive cooling for 5 1/4 bays, as my case (gigabyte aurora) doesnt have the HDD best cooling i was looking at the Vantec vortex range, thye look good and seem to work.... but they are about 20-25 a time... and when u have 2 HDD's the price adds up.
the coolermaster lite, is also another option.. but it doesnt look as good as vantec's
Maybe consider a cheap sata caddie; bought a couple from Scan a little while ago - not only does this make them removable but they also have a front cooling solution.
If you're case doesn't get many knocks I would recommend removing the hard disk cage and suspending the hard disks with round elastic.Originally Posted by jackvdbuk
Although my case has good cooling (Akasa Eclipse) I decided to suspend the HD (Seagate Barracuda) to cut down on vibration.

I have 7 HDDs in my Eclipse and the vibration wasn't that bad.Originally Posted by amjedm
If you got any cool running harddrive, just give it more surface area will be enough to provide cooling. In my case I have some simple metal plating that mount my HDDs in the 5.25" slot and the surface area of that plating is enough to keep my hdd cool.
The elastic suspension will reduce noise and vibration but cut down the cooling surface area (when attached to the drive cage the cage act as an additional heatsink). Hence you'll need more airflow to cool the drive which is another source of noise and vibration. Pretty pointless IMO.

I've been looking at a hard drive "cooler" myself, but exclusevely to reduce the noise of my 150Gb Raptor. Having now read lots of reviews my opinion is that the Scythe is the best for noise reduction. As for cooling, some reviewers suggested it helped others said that it made the drive hotter by a few degrees.
If your concern is cooling then you need something with a fan - no question. Although I think someone has come out with a water cooled hard drive cooler if you REALLY want one...
i was thinking about that, ive got a full tower so with 2 optical drives there are still another 4 spare baysOriginally Posted by piranha
it would mean i could recycle my old drives but there doesnt seem to be anywhere to buy spare caddies to go in it, which means buying a whole new unit
if the bays have holes in them as opposed to the tool less bays you could mount hard disks using elastic/stretch magic?Originally Posted by -ChEM-
well that sounds mighty interesting but i was just talking abou this kind of thing
say i have 6 drives i would need 6 caddies and 1 housing
but it only comes with 4 and you cant buy them separately afaik
