Tagan went boom, time to go Hiper?

I built a couple of systems late last year, almost identical spec, with a Tagan 480W PSU as it seemed to be very popular.
This morning one of them died on me (verified it was the PSU that croaked by hooking up the other PSU temporarily).

Can't be bothered taking advantage of the 3 year warranty (I assume it involves shipping back to Germany at my cost), so I'm looking for a PSU to order early next week.

I am somewhat perplexed by the advertised Hiper "Type-R" PSU:
    Komplett's link

Description says "Hiper Type-R 580W Black, Dual Fan, Silent 18db, 4xSATA, ATX, SLI, 20/24pin", yet the spec seems to say it has a (single?) dedicated PCI-E connector... so how is one meant to power 2 graphics boards running in SLI?
    Or did I miss something...

The dead Tagan has 2x 6-pin PCI-E connectors, I want to know if the Hiper has the same (modular-wise).

    Anyone know?

Who did you buy it off Paul? Chances are you can just directly RMA it to them.
If not, it will be a RMA with Nanopoint (they deal with Tagan RMA's in the UK). Even though I have not used them, apparently they are pretty quick

To answer your other question: You can just get a Molex -> 6pin PCI-E adaptor for a few quid. I wouldn’t generally recommend this though due to power issues - if the PSU is sharing a rail with the g.card and other devices, it can cause ripples and fluxuations in the voltage. While this isn’t an issue most of the time, if power drain becomes high, it can be enough to kick you out of a game.
If you’re using 2 PCI-E cards in SLI, I would really recommend getting one that is purpose built for this. I’m sure you don’t need preaching to about how important a good PSU is

In all honesty, id just get the Taran sorted, they are dam good PSU's.

I went from Hiper to Tagan just a while ago. Blew a Hiper 580W Modular and went to Tagan Easycon 530W. IMO They're both nice PSUs.

Originally the Hiper PSU didn't have 2 PCIe connectors. However, since being SLi certified, they included another in the box for you I believe. I think the one you're going for is the same as the one I will be getting.

Here is the official manufacturers site for all their psus check against the model number of the one you are interested in (sorry too tired to check your link)

Edit: i looked anyway here it is and it seems it has only one pci-e connector but comes with a 2 molex to pci-e connector (molex =12v+5v, pci-e=3x 12v so roughly the same but it is a hiper psu so it should be fine especially it is worthy of the sli ready logo.

I would concur - that's why I want a PSU with 2 definite features: quiet as possible and 2x PCI-E connectors.
Making the PSU modular would be a bonus, as I only have a need for 3x SATA power connectors and 1 molex (for the DVD drive).
I don't actually use the SLI feature of my mainboard now, but as I bought the 2 machines with identical kit so in the future I will have that option, it would be silly to skimp on a PSU and possibly run into issues later.

I'm just too impatient! And I might need my rig again for having devs in the US use my machine for live debugging of my reported Vista driver bug again soon, so I need it back onlne asap.

Thanks for the replies all, I shall poke around this weekend to see what Komplett have (and have in stock) that suits my needs.

Love Hiper, know lots of other peeps with them and they've been delighted, Hiper are great and revising their PSUs and despite the original ones being flakey they reworked them and they're rock solid. I haven't had a problem with mine, its rock solid! They do have two PCI-E connectors, their modular screw system is very secure and they look great. Awesome value for money!

I have a Hiper PSU of some flavour (400W I think) to replace a stock one in an HP pre-built system I bought a while ago, never had problems with it.

However, the Type-R does only have 1 6-pin PCI-E connector so I'll can that idea.

    The Seasonic 500W PSU PDF says it has "1+1 6-pin PCI-E" so I guess it's daisy-chained?

The favourite at present is the Tagan EasyCon 530W which is modular and definitely has 2 discrete PCI-E connectors:
    Tagan 530W EasyCon PSU

I just need to get a reply from Komplett as to why they say it only has 1 PCI-E connector (to check they don't have a previous revision or something):
    Komplett's version - different image

In the meantime I'll have to play with my new toy - the Squeezebox hooked up to my WLAN and digital amp

you would be silly NOT to use nanopoint.

i had to RMA with them, and they collect the old unit from you upon delivery of the brand new one. it took me about a week to get it all sorted, and they sent me the updated 480U01 with the special PCIE connectors and the 6pin connector too.

i dont believe hiper make the best PSUs - you could always try seasonic.
