Asus P5W-DH Dead Already?

i was bored earlier, so i took the north bridge cooler off and it wasnt even making contact with the northbridge properly, just one edge, so that might be why its dead, the actual heatpipe itself isnt straight, so the heatsink sits at an angle, pretty shoddy that.

another quite idiotic design flaw...(or maybe they are all like this, i dunno yet) is the fact that they only have 2 clips of the loop variety for the northbridge heatsink, meaning that you cant use any kind of decent cooler on it, there are spaces for the other 2 clips (loops) but no clips/loops there.

i think i might just try that gigabyte one.


edit: and someone correct me if im wrong, but isnt there a cmos jumper to speak of? i can see a cmos real time clock jumper...and the battery is behind the graphics card slots, so if you need to clear the cmos, you have to take out the graphics card, not ideal in a watercooled setup.



and yeah, kind of wish i had stuck with the DFI setup now..bugger.

I just had a look at a pic of it, the CMOS battery/reset is a very stupid place.

The designed the board for double slot GFX coolers then completely forgot that a big lump of metal would be there when you needed to reset the CMOS.

I threw some generic Elixer stuff from PC World in and it all came to life...

System was just spinning the fans before.

Stick with DFI the you know in advance it will break.

Well, neither stick works on its own, so I am guessing its plain incompatibility.

Dont have another DDR2 board to test with.

Not sure how much truth there is in it but as I see your running a 533FSB CPU I thought it may be worth a mention...


OCZ are telling me that virtually everyone running a 805D CPU with 800FSB RAM in a 965 or 975 board are having issues, due to a divider issue.

Could potentially be an issue with a lot of 533FSB CPUs?

Stick with DFI the you know in advance it will break.

IMO most instances of DFI's not working is "user error" apart from their NF3 754 board that got a hardware revision.

My DFI's been solid as a rock and I wish they'd release a nice conroe board

Just had a very long phone call from one Tony at OCZ....very helpful chap.

It seems that many DDR2 800 and above modules are having issues with 965/975 (and even AM2) boards. The issue is effecting every manufacturer to some degree.

Basically, if you are using a 533 FSB CPU and the RAM is set to startup at 800MHz (via the SPD), the memory controller crashes, hense no bootup.

Switching to a 800FSB CPU should fix the issue.....I will be in contact with him this evening to go through flashing my brand new OCZ RAM with an updated SPD table to see if we can confirm the issue and move on from there.

So, your problem may well be the same, mine has booted a few times with the OCZ RAM in, maybe your first few bootups were lucky.....

Will let you know tomorrow how the RAM-flash goes - must say I am a little nervous at the prospect of flashing some 48 hour-old RAM

no probs here with an 805d P5W DH combo,running @ 3.7

2 gig of value select ddr2-5300 also

never need to access the cmos jumper, just hold down the insert key from cold boot works anytime I overdo the clocking

i think mine was a power issue to be honest, i had no fans spinning or anything, the motherboard led was on and flashing fast/strobing, but nothing when trying to power up. its good that OCZ recognise there is a problem and are working to fix it. the board has gone back today, not sure what to try next, theres so much KACK about.

That RAM will be fine as it wont try and set a 800Mhz RAM speed.

From whats been explained to me, if you put any newly manufactured PC6400 or above RAM in there, it probably wont boot.
