    athlon 64 4400+, 4600+ or pentium d 950 ?

    which of these will get me the best gaming performance ?

    4400 and 4600 mate, Pentium D 950 are crap in games, I had one before I got this system.

    Personally I would have the 4400+ because of the extra cache, but its not a mega difference, I think the 4400 could be clocked to well over 2.6Ghz, and that that speed is an FX-60.

    Other option is to upgrade to a Core 2 Duo E6300, which at 2.5Ghz would hammer the best AMD have to offer (FX-62)

    thanks james interesting idea about the conroe but im buying a panther entry level from scan and this isnt an option. im gonna buy this for now then wait for a e6600 and upgrade to conroe in a couple of months.

    so for now is it 4400 or 4600 ? i dont even know what cache does

    4600+ the extra cache is only worth a couple of percent in almost every task. I'm using a 4600+ now, nice and quick.

    3XS will most likely be doing core 2 duo systems soon btw, if you dont mind a wait, might be worth PM'ing DavidM and see if he has some kind of time frame for it.

    Yeah the entry level core 2 duo machine would leave you a very nice upgrade path.

    Or you could venture into your own build and spend the £300 you save on more power
