    Unhappy I cant hear anything!

I have got a problem with my htpc it has been working fine until today, I switched it on everything booted up ok and everything seems to be working alright except there is no sound I have got a SoundBlaster live 24bit with the latest drivers! I even tried the onboard audio but that does not work either.

I tried doing a system restore but that did not solve it!
it seems really strange as yesterday it was working fine.

it is running a fully updated windows media center 2005 edition

    asrock k7s41gx
    athlon xp 1800+
    corsair 512mb pc2700
    NVIDIA fx5200 256mb
    450w aspire psu
    creative SoundBlaster live 24bit
    leadtek dvt1000t

I really don't want to reinstall windows unless that is the only option!

please please give me some suggestions on how to solve this problem as its doing my head in!

Take a cotton bud and stick it in your ear, twist, remove, and put it in the bin

Make sure all the speaker connections (inc power) are connected correctly and, authough it may sounds obvious, make sure the volume nob it turned up!!

    Next try some different speakers

what do you think of instead of reinstalling windows do you think trying a linux live cd (one that runs linux on your pc without installing anything) and see if the sound works then?

The fact that you're getting no sound either from your soundcard or the onboard sound makes me think a cable has gone wonky somewhere. Have you tried changing the cable cable connecting the sdouncard to the speakers?

thats the only thing i can think of when i get home from work i will try the linux disc and see if that works if not i guess i will have to reinstall windows.

i am thinking now that surely it cant be a hardware problem because both the onboard audio and the soundcard are not working!

Windows hasn't set anything to mute has it? I've had it where for some reason Windows decided to mute everything hence no sound. Don't know how it happened and it's only done it twice in 5 years but it's happened.
