    Strange noise

I can hear an on/off noise (ie throbing) coming from my PC. The noise when it comes on is like a rattling/vibrating type sound.

I think it may be the PSU and it has been getting worse recently.

Intrestingly it seems to have gone away after i put my heaset (i was trying to record the sound for you guys) ontop of the case over the PSU compartment.

The PSU is Tagan 480w 2Force.

Im not really sure where to go from here.

Im not sure about warrenty as i have changed the molex plugs and on one i was changing i broke the wire and covered it in electrical tape!!

    Thanks!

The fix should either work or it shouldn't. If you're not sure, just re-apply the tape a bit more carefully.

Throbbing noises tend to come from 2 sources in my experience. Something not tightened properly (case side for instance) or a hard drive that is either failing, or a PSU that can't deliver enough power (causing a hard drive to momentarily switch off and on).

If you have a big case they tend to rattle a bit moving it slightly or hitting it fixes the problem for me or possibly your HD is loose. You should also try priming your machine(just a couple of minutes will do) if the noise comes more apparent and solid, then it's your PSU hitting max output.

I've got a Samsung Spinpoint 2004 which does exactly the same thing. A kind of rhytmic pulsing that only started about a week after I installed it. A look over at the SPCR forums shows that it is a common problem, but fortunately is not a characteristic of the drive failing.

It's a pity though, as I bought the Samsung for their reputation in silence, and it turns out to be the noisiest component in my box (and purely down to this humming / pulsing noise)

Put me on the list of throbbing / humming / pulsing Samsung Spinpoints! Drive performs great but it is a little bit annoying. I've had to move the case off the top of my desk as the throb used to vibrate through it.
