Just wondering about what on earth is going to happen to all those Pentium D chips leftover who is going to buy them?

But seriously, they will still sell for the time being. They start at around 25--30 quid, that is a great price for a budget system, especially if prices of conroe boards drop to a point where someone could actually build an entire budget system with future conroe compatibility.

Intel will take time to ramp up production of the Conroe chips. Intel say they expect ~25% of desktop chip sales to be Core2 by the end of the year, so 75% of their customers will still be getting the old rubbish!

because the people who purchase for large companies tend to buy on a budget and look for a stable well proven platform, so expect to see [as stated previouly ] a healthy glut of pentium D systems from Dell and the likes

most buisness machines are only required to do word processing etc so no benefit in having a superior chip in there, so again expect to see only the top end workstations from Dell getting the conroe treatment in 1st instance.

I'm hoping to justify a new cad machine to replace my current one shortly, so as part time I.T. admin, I am watching what is on offer closely atm , already got a conroe setup at home so keen to get similar performace for work duties

Intel cannot change all of their production overnight. It will take time.

In fact, I believe the chips coming out of Intel today started down the production line something like 3 months ago. That gives you some idea of the sheer momentum of production they have.

I'm sure Intel will find some way of selling them, after all if a company has already got 100 dog's breakfast CPU machines (you may guess I never liked the P4) then what does another two or three matter before the decent Conroes start turning up in volume?
