    Help with USB2 HDD external enclosure please..

    I've got an 'Akasa Intergral' External PATA IDE HDD enclosure, with USB2 interface, and I can't get any drive that I put in it recognised by Windows. I've tried a 300GB drive with data already on it, and I've tried a new blank 40GB drive.

    In both cases, the drives are recognised in XP Disk Management, but have a red 'no entry' warning symbol and are classified as 'un-initialised'. When I try to initialise them through the simple wizard, it doesn't appear to do anything.

    The drives never appear as ready or unallocated, and as a result, I can't partition, assign a letter, or format.

    I've even tried the caddy on a Windows 98SE machine with similar results - drive recognised, but not accessible.

    Do you think it'a driver issue, or a fault with the caddy?

    <scratches head>

    Many thanks,
    S.

    Check the drive and see if its jumper is set to Master / Single Drive.

    Sound like a bad enclosure to me. Would be easier to check if you can try it on another computer

    Try setting the drive to either master or CS (cable select), I'd try the CS option first as from what I've seen most of these caddies have the drive set to that.

    Just wanted to update and say thanks for the replies.. It turns out that it was a faulty enclosure.. I got a replacement, and all the drives worked in it, on both machines.

    Second time lucky, I guess.. Thanks again.
