    Thinking of an upgrade.

    I currently have:

    AMD 754 3700+
    X1800XT
    Abit NV8
    2gb Geil

    I'm thinking of going to:

    Asus p5W
    E6600
    2gb geil DDR

I can't find any good reviews on the net (which use a good resolution as I play at 1680*1050). I presume the conroe still does well even in high res? Also will i notice a benefit from dual core (with multitasking etc?).

You will need DDR2 not DDR as you listed. Conroe is the fastest processor at the moment by 15-20% over an Athlon 64.
As you up the resoloution its your graphics card that limits your gaming performance, to get the most out of a conroe 6600 you would need an SLI or Crossfire setup.
Saying that 1680x1050 is not all that high a resolution.
Not having a dualcore I can't say how they perform in multitasking.
I think its worth waiting a few weeks to see what other mobos are released, as both ATI and Nvidia are about to release their offerings,

The conroe will be far better at anything than your current kit. Your going to need to change your ram for some DDR2
    Will you be overclocking?

Sorry the geil i mentioned for conroe is DDR2, i just missed it off.

I probably won't OC but I may have a little dabble.

Haven't some people been having problems with dead Asus P5W's? Might want to consider the Gigabyte boards as a few people on here have them and say they aren't shabby boards.

The Gigabyte DS4 looks to have better cooling than the DS3 for just a little more. Some people are getting pretty good overclocks with the DS3/4 as well !
