SOme places do the original stuff in multi packs. For my IP400 I get a pack with 3 colours in, then buy a 2 pack of the blacks. Works out a bit cheaper. I only really print phoytos on my clour pronter (laser for text), so stick to genuine stuff.

Yes, I got a three colour set for my older i850 for £20 (staples or tesco) compared with about £8 per colour.

The printer was complaining about low ink on Cyan and Magenta, so I assumed that the yellow was Nealy empty as well, but when I opened it up to change all there, I found that the yellow was still half full. Any ideas how?

For me cyan goes quickest, its not a problem. With printers that have a single cart containing multiple colours you end up throwing a load of ink away, multi cart system you only replace the colours that run out.

Tesco sell the ip4200 printer and I am fairly sure they sell the ink as well.

About £19 for a set of 3 colours as I recall.

Older Cannons have a much simpler system.

The cartrage is transparent, so it is easy to take out and judge the ink level by looking at it.

The printer has an optical sensor that can tell when the cartrage is nearly empty, but not judge the level if there is plenty left.
