Question XP Home with new motherboard.

    Hi,
    RE: my post http://forums.hexus.net/showthread.php?t=82439

New mobo on it's way, however what I need to know is will the original windows run from the hdd, or do I have to buy a new copy?

Basically it's the original pc that came with windows preinstalled, but it will have a new psu & new mobo.

    Cheers.

you may run into driver conflicts, just do fresh install, i did the same thing the other day and activated no probs. if you have to ring microsoft, tell them you have had the board replaced under warranty...or some other white lie..they usually let it pass

Basically you need to do a fresh install with a new system (it may possibly work without but it may be quite unstable). Possibly the code will not work for registering over the internet as it was an OEM copy but you can phone MS up an a person will give u a code.

However you are breaching the licence by changing the motherboard so you would have to lie to the person and say that you are just doing a fresh install.

However this means that you will infact be using a illeagle copy of windows which may be a problem with you.

To be leagle you would have a to buy a new retail copy as even a new OEM copy would not really count as its not a new system!!!

the above isnt true. if you decided to buy a new oem copy of windows, you can do so, just by buying it with a £2 mouse.

for £60-£70, im afraid that i would have to lie to microsoft. in my opinion, buying xp once is enough.

agreed the whole OEM thing is ridiculous - if you've bought it once then that should be enough

i tried doing a clean install on my new machine with my copy of windows home, and it wouldn't let me install it via the internet, i had to phone the automated service, then it apparently said my key was invalid. Needless to say i dont actually use that copy of XP home any more as ive invested elsewhere. (Dapper Drake anyone?)

Cheers guys, I'll give it a go.

I do have a "Spare" copy of XP Pro I could use, but would rather hang on to it if possible.
