Looking For PSU / Motherboard / Case for gaming system
Hi everyone, I'll soon be building a high-end gaming system but I'll need some help choosing the last remaining components. This is what I already have decided on:
Core 2 Duo E6600 (edit)
2x1gb Corsair ddr2 800 RAM
Viewsonic vx2025wm
2x 250gb Samsung SpinPoint P120
1gb nVidea 7950gx2
creative t7900 7.1 speakers
LG GSA-H10N DVD drive
I still need a motherboard, PSU and case. Probably a second DVD drive. lI will be grateful for any advice that you could give. Thanks!

Um not to P on your fire or anything you may want to reconsider that spec and get an intel core 2 duo cpu and appropriate motherboard. They are currently the best processors around - a mid range E6600 will perform better than an AMD FX62. I don't know much about the intel motherboards unfortunately so i can't recommend a good motherboard to go with an intel core 2 duo cpu, hopefully someone else here will be able to answer that.
As for case, what kind of designs do you like - simple or extravagent? I currently have a silverstone J05B which i love. Akasa also do good cases - the akasa eclipse-62 and mirage-62 are well worth a look.

Second kasavien's opinion on the Akasa cases - they are very good.
PSU - Seasonic are one of the best.

I think half of us have read your misfortunes with recent boards.
To be perfectly honest, I don't think you can go wrong with the new Akasa Zen cases, only £30, with 2 120mm fans included, or if you want to spend more (like an extra 70 if you want decent fans) then the Akasa Eclipse/Mirage are top quality cases.
I would personally get an AKASA Mirage and next the Eclipse-62 (only slightly different).
And i would get the 600w Seasonic PSU
However those two together with fans will clock up to over £200 so if you dont want to spend all that get an Antec P150 which is a good chassis includes a good PSU for just £100.
As for your components definately swap the A64 for a C2.

id defo agree with the swapping of the 64 for the core 2, for around the same price the E6600 will well out perform the 5000+ your looking at!

and the freezer 7 pro is almost a mush buy!
as for the case, the p150 is a fantastic case and teh psu that comes with it is also good, but there have been problems with the compatibility of it with certain mobos (and its only a 400W if my memory serves me...), and if the white doesnt take your fancy then the SOLO comes in black and w/o psu so you can put something like the seasonic s12-430 or 500 in it as the system your looking at will be power hungry with the 7950gx2 card

loads of people on here seem to recommend the artic 7 cooler, i've only ever seen bad reviews of it! personally i'd go for one of the scythes (i'm going for a mine as it's damn near silent)

I suppose I will have to grudgingly abandon AMD on this one (I can't be a fanboy forever). I didnt realise that the E6600 price was so low!
The case would be one that prefferably stands out, but not by too much (no excess neon or wierd shapes). I'd probably go for a mainly black case, but other less prominant colours are OK.
What PSU power rating would I need for this system. Is 500W enough? 600? What manufacturers are the most reliable?
Im having the most trouble witht the mobo though. Id need it to accomodate my 2 SATA drives, have 3 PCI slots, maybe 2 PCIe 1x or 1 PCIe 4x. SLi not needed.
500 should be enough. Seasonic, Tagan, Fortron (FSP), Silverstone, Enermax.
The Akasa cases should fit the criteria you've specified.
AMD fanboy myself so can't advise on Intel systems

At the moment, the DS4 boards are very good for overclocking (at least on the E6300/6400 they are, not sure about the E6600). However, they have had numuerous problems with memory incompatibility which requires a BIOS update to fix. I would like to suggest my board, which has received good reviews with it's beta BIOS which were released for the reviewers and achieved some pretty good overclocks. As for the cooler, not meaning to be biased, but the Freezer 7 Pro is very good. The fan can shift a lot of air and the heatsink is an absolute monster.
I've interpreted the spcr review as saying it's not a good cooler. I've only read the last page.
from what i got out of that review they were saying that it was a good cooler, but not as good as the ones that were twice its price (ie the ninja), so they were recomending it as a great out of the box cooler for a budget, but i can see how it can be interpreted as being not so good
however thye tested that on a P4 which chucks out a lot more heat then the new conroes, so itd cool the core2 very well at a low noise/speed and give good overclocking headroom
tho if the budget can stectch for a scythes, then by all means do it as it is a better cooler, but not a better as the doubble price tag would lead you to believe, imho
