    DS3 Question..Knackered, or just a Quirk?

here i am, a week later, with another motherboard.

When i power on, the fans spin up for a second, then everything goes off again for another couple of seconds and then powers on again and boots up...is this normal?

also, the motherboard itself is making a noise like a dialup 56k modem, or an old spectrum, it seems to stop when it gets to windows, but what is it?

I also had the non-boot issue with the ocz ram, oddly, it fired up first time, but stopped at the "press del to enter bios" screen, then second time it didnt get that far, and third time there was no picture on the monitor at all...luckily i have a spare cheapo stick of ddr2 and it fired up first time, set the vdimm to 2.2v manually in the bios and all seems to be fine, apart from the above things i mentioned.

    any ideas anyone?

    thanks

I beleive that is the motherboard doing cycles reading the SPD tables from the RAM, trying to boot, failing, then reading the next SPD table and booting successfully from it.

At least thats how its been explained to me by someone in the know.

All the new DDR2 boards do it I beleive.

That noise sounds a bit like what people were talking about in another thread recently, something to do with an onboard LAN adapter IIRC.

the noise could be the toroids squealing, put ur finger on them when ur pc is switched on and see if the noise stops

its a definate pattern of noise like a modem, and theres no speaker, so you might be right.

as for the cycling, could be right, but it still does it with a single stick of pc2-4200 cheapo ram, its as if its going to actually turn off and decides not to bother

My P5B does that same. So either its a sympton of the 965 chipset or the DDR2 RAM.

I had one of the guys from OCZ on the phone last week trying a few things and he expected it to happen and gave me that as the reason.

my friends did that aswell actually, I just went and built it a couple of minutes ago (literally). But all is well and we went fora relatively tame overclock of 400Mhz since his RAM isn't very good..

well, last night it started to just cut out, then power up and then before it got to post, it would poer off and back on in a constant cycle. i reset the cmos (by taking the battery out grrrr) and changed the ram to the cheap stuff (grrrrrrrrrrr) and it then cycled a couple of times and let me boot to the bios....today, the conroe arrived and it booted to the bios first time, then when i changed the memory timings it went into the constant restart cycle again and i cant get it to stop, at the moment i have got the cmos battery out again (grrrrrrrrr wheres the friggin jumper??). to be honest, i cant see how this is doing any of the other components any good, when its turning on and off all the time, so i am going to send it back for a refcund, what a crock of crap that turned out to be...and dont get me started on the noises it makes.

and in case anyone is considering one of these, they arent good overclocking boards, they arent designed with the enthusiast in mind, they are riddled with bugs/problems and the bioses are terrible..come back DFI all is forgiven.
