Im sure i saw a post on hexus a while back and someone mentioned that somewhere had modular laptop parts in stock.....can anyone remember where this was? failing that, does anyone know if its even possible to build your own laptop nowadays with possibly a barebones kit or the like?

Definitly possible, though don't know much more than that. I've occasionly seen a review of barebones kits.

The UK magazine CustomPC recently ran an article on building your own laptop. Your options are fairly limited but it is possible.
by modular, i meant a chassis with interchangeable everything. like they have an atx/matx standard, well one for laptops. the barebones thing is getting there, but i was really thinking about starting from scratch like with a big pc :)Quote:

Ok ive been onto MSI and they say the only one they are aware of is savastore and to contact the MSI UK team - No answer to the phone but it is a bank holiday today so ill try again tomorrow.
I was looking at building my own laptop a couple of months ago and the options available were not that good. As mentioned in the linked article, I couldn't find the barebones system that used a MXM slot. Even if I had, I could only find one place (MXM-Upgrade) that actualy stocked MXM cards seperately. This just leaves barebones chassis with intergrated graphics which can't be upgraded later on, and I thought that kind of defeated my reason for going the DIY route. In the end, I decided that I wasn't going to save myself much money and decided to get a prebuilt one that had a MXM slot so I could upgrade later on if I wanted to.
Whilst I think it would be great to be able to build your own laptops like desktops, I don't see it happening any time soon. Manufacturers wouldn't make any money from it (probably lose money), so there is no reason for them to develop this.
The problem with mxm is 1 the availability and 2 the HSF are different for different cards - they are not all compatable.
So either way you are quite limited.
