My mate is jus about to sell his laptop on ebay, it might be perfect for your friend, it is a Dell and is good spec i think it is 2.5 years old, let me know if you want full details
Hi,
Just about any modern laptop is capable of DVD watching (as long as it has a DVD drive!) and running Office - Dell laptops have served me well, and they do one now for 300-400 quid approx if I remember right. But as I said, I wouldn't worry too much if he's sure he doesn't want to use it for games / video editing!
What about THIS dual core fujitsu laptop for £499.99 from Comet?

That looks like a good option. Alternatively the Dell Inspiron 6400 has the same specs but only 512mb ram and an 80gb hard drive instead.
They are £498.47 at the moment but i picked one up for £478 about a week ago and i plan on buying an extra 512mb ram for about £25 and making it dual channel. The offers change often. If you ring them you can often haggle especially for extras like the battery upgrade which is well worth it.

If you are prepared to wait, then dell quite often do double memory/free delivery deals on their laptops which will boost the spec and lower the cost Thats the only reason that my laptop has 2Gb of RAM in it - otherwise I would have gone for a different one
