I'm thinking of investing in a new Heatsink & Fan for my socket 939 CPU.
So far I'm tempted by the Zalman CNPS9500 AM2 and the Akasa AK-920 EVO 120.
I'm purely after temperature control here, I don't really give a dingo's kidney what it looks like.
Firstly does anyone have any opinions about either of these, or maybe better models?
Secondly is socket 939 likely to be around for a while yet? If I'm spending £20 - £30 on this it would be nice to be able to use it on my next CPU aswell.

I have the Zalman 9500 and its ok, I have it on its lowest settings and it brings the same temps as the stock cooler but at a whisper.

Most coolers work on several sockets - 775/939/940, so look out for that and you should be fine for the next few upgrades :)

I must say, that Scythe Ninja does looks like a superb solution.... but have you seen the dimensions?! 110 x 110 x 150mm!! My case is probably average to large in size and I'm not sure that puppy will fit in... 150mm tall! Cripes, the inside chassis is only about 160 mm wide!

The Ninja isn't AM2 compatible (apart from not fitting in your case).
I got the Ninja because I wanted passive cooling for a S939 3000 and also you can attach the fan to any of the sides so direct airflow to the back of the case.

I installed it onto a 4200 X2 and have kept the fan just off full speed and you can't hear it (that includes with the case open). 1 thing to know about the ninja is the size of it, its like a tower block! and therefore is not compatible with some cases.

I've ordered the Zalman CNPS9500 AM2 in the end, along with a Silverstone case fan. Incidently, is it considered best to have the case fan pointing the airflow out of the case?

Well that was apparently a complete waste of money, it's currently at 50 degrees (with the fan on full) and I'm only running Winamp and Opera :(
How much thermal paste are you supposed to use? I applied about half the small tube as I read it was better not to put too much on.
You need to use about BB szed dot at most, get some Artic silver 5 and try that.
Sounds like you've mounted it badly, or you didn't mention thats it's overclocked to 4.0ghz.
