At the moment i have a P4 3ghz prescot, Asus P4C800e-dlx, 2gb ram and a 6800. This system serves me fine and does everything i want.
would a mid ranged new conroe system be a lot better? or would i not really notice any increase in speed!?

I've just moved from:
P4 3.4 GHz Prescott, Asus P4P800E, 2 Gb Crucial DDR, 2 Samsung Spinpoint 160Gb in RAID 0, 256Mb 7800GS
to:
E6600, Gigabyte DS4, 2Gb Corsair XMS2, 2 Samsung Spinpoint 250 Gb in RAID 0, 512Mb 7900GTX
...and by god I can see a difference
A mid-range conroe system could be considerably faster I think. Conroes are dual-core would help out with multitasking and video-encoding. They are also much faster for gaming than Pentium 4s. However upgrading would cost a fair bit so if your system is fast enough for you as it is I don't think it's worth it.
even in simple internet, email, word applications and media applications? im not really that interested in games although i do play them once and a while.
I'd say that you'll notice little or no real improvement. You could probably underclock your current CPU or downgrade it and you'll notice little difference for what you are doing with it.
No point in spending cash for the sake of it, unless it's burning a hole in your pocket...
i had no real plans to upgrade just yet. this system does everything i want for now. might upgrade in a year or so, or when high deff video kicks off as this pc isnt really up to that. thanks for your input guys, just confirming what i kinda expected
I have a similar spec rig to yours and am equally happy with it. I'm sure you would notice a difference if you moved to Conroe but I really wouldn't bother yet if I were you.
When Vista finally arrives next year it might be a slightly different story... I'm keeping my rig as is until then.... well OK maybe just a few little changes... but nothing major!
Good advice! yes you will notice a huge difference but you will notice more of a difference next year and probably for less money tooOriginally Posted by cotswoldcs
