    Question i965 or i975?

I am building a PC for a friend and am going for a low/mid Conroe-based system, probably a E6300 or E6400. He is not really into overclocking so I guess 1Gb of PC5300 will be fine (correct me if I'm wrong here).

My real question is should I go for a i965 based board or a i975 one? In other words how much performance benefit is there in i975 and is it worth the extra cash (remember this is unlikely to be overclocked)?

    Thanks in advance
    Jon

The performance difference at otherwise identical settings is negligible. Therefore get the best board for the money you have to spend, i965 or i975.

also if your looking for sli or crossfire then only the 975 supports crossfire and to get sli you would have to go down the line of the new nf590 but iv only seen one of these on sale at scan atm but they should be on there way soon

but if none of that matters then the 965 would prob be the best price mobo you can get as they are generally cheaper then the 975 with mostly the same performance

You can even consider a 945 mobo

Much cheaper and just the same performance.

I didn't think 945 supported conroe? though I may be wrong...

good point, the new revisions do as they needed a slight upgrade to support the voltages required for conroe, same with a lot of the 975 boards, the 965 is they only chipset that had support from the get go

Gone for a 965-based board in the end, so I'm sure it's compatible. The 975 didn't seem worth it, since no overclocking was anticipated .

    Thanks for the replies

My i945G (Asus P5LD2-VM SE, £54 from Scan) was powered up for the first time last night. Seems to work fine with the E6300. Also allows minor overclocking (30% limit I think).
