WMP - excessive use of system resources

First off, i know this is in the wrong section and i apologies, i put it in the software & bineries section a few days ago and so far havn't had much of a response. I listen to my music a lot, even more so now that i have connected my hi-fi to my PC and run the music through that, so this is driving my mad.

Just started using my new pc on a regular basis now, inc listening ot my music via WMP. Recently iv noticed WMP eats up a helluvalot of CPU & memory resources(more then usual), we are taking a min of 50k, and averaging 120k - 150k, enough to cause itself to lagg & jutter the music.

Our old PC never had this problem and WMP rarely went higher then 25k, so somethings up. So far iv upgraded to the b2 of WMP 11 hopeing it would correct itself but so far no luck, it still sits there eating 100k+ memory and 50% CPU usage.

There are no plugins, and im running duel core 6300, gig ram, 7900GT etc, Xp patched up to the eyes.

It starts off normally around 22k, but then drops to 19k, rises to 26k, drops to 24k, rises to 36k.....until it laggs the whole PC and i need to pull the plug. Even if i just have WMP open, without music etc being played it will still do this. As it stands i need to restart the PC every 5-10mins to 'reset' WMP.

Any idea what could be causing this? Its a nightmare when it comes to playing games & running it in the background.

One more thing; i dont plan on changing players, used WMP for too long to change & cba with the hassle of switching, but thanks for the would-be suggesions anyway.

    cheers guys.

Well thats a daft attitude IMO. WMP is a dog. It seems like switching would cause you less hassle in the long run. There are soooo many better apps out there, but as requested i won't suggest any. Good luck!

yeh, occured on WMP10, i went to WMP 11 hopeing it would sort it.

No, its not a daft attitude, Iv used WMP for years now, got all my playlists etc sorted, i find it quick and easy to use and it does exactly what i want it to do without too many silly add-ones. iv tried several other players; media player classic, real player, winamp etc and im yet to find one that impressed me enough to warrant a change.

Does anyone know anywhere else i could try for support? tried MS newsgroups, google, other tech forums, yet cant find any info on what could be causing it. Bit hesitant about contacting MS direct due possible issues with my legit(-ish) XP.
