    no sound output?!!?

my friend has just built a system with some bits he got from maplin. after some hassle of gettin xp installed everything is working except the onboard sound. his mobo is an XFX nforce2 with the usual 6channel onboard sound. no errors/conflicts are recognised by windows and playback of mp3s etc begins but no sound can be heard. im completely stumped. the speakers are plugged into the line out and they work perfectly on my pc.

    any ideas?

At a very quick guess, and having Nforce onboard sound myself, the drivers should be installed. This HAS to be done before you can get the onboard sound, and ethernet cards (if it has one), to work.

CD should come in the mobo box.

Additional. Here is a direct link if there is no cd. Or if you want to use the most up to date drivers.

Go to control panel -> System -> Hardware -> Device manager.

And see what is says about the sound + multimedia things.

K.... Windows lies. It has never ever found a problem for me to date. But it seems like its always worth a look somehow.

My next question was is it enabled in the bios ? But since windows reports its there.... Then it has to be on in the bios. That leaves me scratching my head. And asking. Did you reboot after putting the drivers on ?

Don't bite my hand off for asking this. But it is possible to stop the install program from re-booting by accident !

Is it possible that the mobo is busted ??? As setting up sound is not such a problem. I think you should take it back to the mighty maplin.

And say. "This does not work". When they say "Yes it does". Tell them that killgore sent you. And that you would like to see them demonstrate this board working infront of you. This should confuse the shop assistant - probably second year engineering students at the nearest college - and waste tons of their time. Building a whole test systen and all. Installing windows... Putting on drivers and getting out a set of headphones. So they are more likely to say.... "Our bad. here is another one".

Make sure "Use Digital Output" isn't ticked in the advanced sound properties and make sure he has the speakers plugged into the Analog out no the Digital out.
