    Best memory for Conroe

    Hi Every1!

Greetings! I'm tryin to upgrade my memory for my conroe systems, my present specs:

    Conroe E6600, Asus P5BWD H deluxe mobo with 1gb Crucial DDR2 - 667 ram, 320gb HDD with raid 0, 128mb Radeon X1600 XT and SB Audigy soundcard.

I wanted to buy Mushkin Redline DDR2 -1000 but because of the price I'm having second thought. So here are my choices: Corsair Dominator DDR2 8500 with 5-5-5-12, G-Skill DDR2 6400 HZ with 4-4-4-12, Mushkin XP2-6400 4-4-3-10 and Corsair TwinX XMS2 6400C5 with 5-5-5-12.

I heard that latency is not important for conroe but bus speed for the memory. Can any one help by shraing their experience and thought?

Are you going to overclock it? If not there is no value in getting anything other than standard 667MHz DDR2. If you want to OC then there's sense in getting DDR2-800. 1000MHz DDR2 only has any worth if you're going to be pushing the fsb up very high with a specialist OC setup.

Apart from that, the differences in timings have very little effect, so buy on price and service - some motherboards are quite fussy about the RAM they'll take and it's always possible you may need to exchange it.

my plan is to OC the system. i would like to push the it upto 1100 fsb which should be fine for cpu and mobo. but how about the ram? i've chekd all ram review. it's all very different opinion. i've narrowed down the choice between mushkin xp2-6400 with 4-4-3-10 and corsair dominator 8500 with 5-5-5-12. any further suggestion?

The best ram out there at the moment for Conroe boards is almost certainly the G.Skill PC2-6400 HZ. Overclocks like hell and uses the same Micron chips as the G.Skill PC2-8000 versions.

They also work out of the box with the Conroe boards as they boot fine with 1.8v (many other sticks refuse as they have 2.1v etc as standard).

Uh, I can't see that happening, heh. I assume you mean you want to get over 500MHz. This is certainly possible, but needs a ton (and I mean a ton) of cooling for the RAM and chipset. A more realistic aim would be 450MHz, which is quite possible with the right motherboard.

With an FSB of 450MHz, your RAm would be running at 900MHz without any dividers. Most quality DDR-2 800 sticks should be able to handle that with a bit of extra voltage. But at this stage you have to realise that the gains from extra memory speed are extremely small. Memory speed has nowhere near the effect with Intel chips that it does with AMD CPUs with their integrated controller.

If you look through the forum, this question has been talked about before when Conroe first came out. I remember linking to a series of tests that showed the sort of tiny gains you get with tighter RAM timings.

MY teamgroup DDR667 stuff was £150ish for 2gb and does DDR-1000 at 4-4-4-12 (can tighten them up but im still playing about to find the max OC)

Id call it the overclocking mutts nutts

I find mushkin stuff to be expensive for what it does, a little gimmicky, whereas stuff like Gskill and Teamgroup does very weel and is a more underground overclockers bit of kit (mine is D9 fatbody....amazing)

wow! dats gr8 finlay666! team is very popular with OCers in SE Asia. seen their DDR2 6400 module with 4-4-4-10 timing and it stated that it comes with Micron fatbody chips.

If you can go for the DDR667 3-4-4-8 ones, they are cheaper, doing 1ghz is good, and if I loosen the timings to 5-5-5-15 Im sure it could go even higher (cpu is the limit currently)

Its D9 fatbody too, IIRC its the speedbinned ones that cant do 3-3-3-8 from the more expensive one, still goes quick though
