    Zalman, Akasa (or other!) ?

I'm thinking of investing in a new Heatsink & Fan for my socket 939 CPU.

So far I'm tempted by the Zalman CNPS9500 AM2 and the Akasa AK-920 EVO 120.

I'm purely after temperature control here, I don't really give a dingo's kidney what it looks like.

Firstly does anyone have any opinions about either of these, or maybe better models?

Secondly is socket 939 likely to be around for a while yet? If I'm spending £20 - £30 on this it would be nice to be able to use it on my next CPU aswell.

Check out the Scythe Ninja, Tuniq Tower.

I have the Zalman 9500 and its ok, I have it on its lowest settings and it brings the same temps as the stock cooler but at a whisper.

    Thanks.

Agreed, these are the best coolers out there. For performance/dB can't be beaten.

How about a arctic cooling freezer 64 pro as this will fit on AM2 sockets as well.

I know as it fitted on my s754 and now is on my 4600+ AM2.

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=340993 for £13.50.

Most coolers work on several sockets - 775/939/940, so look out for that and you should be fine for the next few upgrades

I must say, that Scythe Ninja does looks like a superb solution.... but have you seen the dimensions?! 110 x 110 x 150mm!! My case is probably average to large in size and I'm not sure that puppy will fit in... 150mm tall! Cripes, the inside chassis is only about 160 mm wide!

The Ninja isn't AM2 compatible (apart from not fitting in your case).

I got the Ninja because I wanted passive cooling for a S939 3000 and also you can attach the fan to any of the sides so direct airflow to the back of the case.

I have a CP9500 AM2. Even with my 4600 at 2.8 it's never broken 45c no matter what burning software I've thrown at it. Dual prime struggles to break 40c.

If you're not bothered about losing the green LED, you can do http://www.silentpcreview.com/article284-page1.html with a fan of your choice, for lower noise or higher airflow.

I went for the Zalman 2 weeks ago as the Ninja is recommended with fan for anything over 3500 - and that blasts out at 23 dBA's whereas the Zalamn has the fan controller which can take the noise down to 18 dBA.

I installed it onto a 4200 X2 and have kept the fan just off full speed and you can't hear it (that includes with the case open). Performace wise its done nothing for the idle temp but after playing BF2 for an about an hour it only goes up to 39/40 whereas before it was reaching the low 50s so performance wise its great.

I'm not saying the ninja is no good as I've not used it (I ruled it out because I thought it looked ugly with the fan) but zalman has a great rep for doing things well and they do it in near silence and so I give it 10 out of 10 and fully recommend it.

I used this site for comparison.
    http://www.quietpc.com/gb-en-gbp/products/amdcooling

1 thing to know about the ninja is the size of it, its like a tower block! and therefore is not compatible with some cases.

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone for the input - these forums rock

I've ordered the Zalman CNPS9500 AM2 in the end, along with a Silverstone case fan. Incidently, is it considered best to have the case fan pointing the airflow out of the case?

Yeah, you want want be dumpng the heat out the back. A rear case fan helps the zalman massively.
