    Good £400 PC base unit

Can anyone spec a good PC for £400 (as title)?

I did a lot of research when s939 was the daddy in terms of price and performance but now I'm in limbo with AM2 and Intel's new offering recently appearing

For £400, I'll need a base unit with a semi-decent graphics card (HDTV output) and quietness would be a bonus

I quite like the look of Gigabyte's Aurora case and the Tagan 430 EasyCon for starters - I'm leaning towards ATI for graphics and a solid motherboard (Asus or Abit) - I'm lost when it comes to DDR2!

Since I know a little about the slightly older Athlon 64s, I was inclined to build an AM2 system but I see that many people are raving about the performance of the Core2Duos

    Thanks for any ideas...

For £400 your going to be pushed to make a decent Core 2 Duo system, the spec below gives an indication of what sort of system you can expect for £400:

    Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 £128.06
    Asrock CONROEXFIRE-ESATA2, i945P £55.23
    2 x 512MB DDR2 PC2-5300 667MHz CAS4 (2x 39.94) = £79.88
    256MB Leadtek 7300GT 8 pipes £52.88
    160Gb Seagate ST3160811AS Barracuda 7200.9 £40.56
    Samsung SH-S182DB/BEBN Black 18x18 ±R x12 RAM £21.46
AKASA Zen case - Black £31.71
    400w Silverpower SP-400P1B PSU £24.43

That lot comes in at £434.21, all parts from Scan.co.uk and thats really getting the spec down to the basics you'll need for a functioning Core 2 Duo system, one aspect that doesnt help with keeping the cost down is the current high price of RAM, the exact same modules were about £28 each a couple of weeks ago.

Don't forget to put the price of an operating system in if your current setup is running an OEM version.
