Ram prices - what is going on?

So yesterday, i was looking for some DDR2 ram and i was amazed at how much it has increased in price. I knew the prices were climbing, but this is ridiculous.

Value ram has more than doubled in price in some places! another example is Corsair 6400-pro has risen by around £80 for a 2GB kit! some OCZ kits have risen by £100...blimey.

Ive heard stories that the price rise is due to some component rising in price at the far eastern end, but which component in a stick of ram costs over £80? the ram chips themselves? is it short supply?

    /end of rant.

    need some cheap ddr2 6400 or 5300

Fairly reasonable question I thought, hardly boring.

harry1 - you have already been asked to stop your 'smart arse' replies. That serves no purpose at all. We will not keep asking you nicely.

RAM is a bit like oil - goes up and down a lot.

I don't know the details, but I expect with AMD moving to DDR2 at the same time as OEM manufacturers preparing for Christmas there's been a surge in demand, which means higher prices. Plus we're putting more RAM in our systems than ever before.

I'm just glad I built my new system back in July. The 2G of RAM I bought is £60 more expensive now.

I suspect that value RAM is closely tied to spot prices, whereas those in the premium range work on longer-term contract prices, so are moderately insulated from short-term fluctuations.

The idea of a forum is to talk, I have a conversation every weekend about the sport in the pub, we've had hundreds of these conversations, but we still have them again. This is the essence of communication and discussion. There is nothing original left to to talk about if you think hard enough. The conversations we're having about conroe are just the same we had about every other new processor. Chill out, join in or sling your hook.

I never knew about it either it was a mate of mine who told me after i asked the same question All comes down to supply and demand. I guess.

So long as people are willing to pay that price (which will be for a while because of conroe fever). I'm guessing the pirces will be rock bottom just after xmas, they usually are.

i would. we could ask harry why he feels the need to post his crap in threads that are of no interest to him but will be to others.

    anyways

i was going to buy a 1gb pair to get my second computer up and running. looks like i will have to hold off on that one. price spikes have happeed before (wasnt it an earthquake or something the last time?) but it always drops back down again

DRAMExchange analysts expect that the growth in the motherboard market will last at least through September.
Does that mean that the memory prices will keep rising through September before stabilising and then dropping?

And makes me think that DDR3 chips on graphics card should be transferred to DDR3 RAM chips so that I can get that extra 1GB of ram cheaper for playing bf2!
    Woohoo now Assistant Manager!
