anyone seen any reviews of different onboard motherboard sound chips?
There is only really one onboard sound chip, which is AC'97. Most of the time, these are reviewed with the motherboard.
Thats just the codec, the audio processing can / will be done by other chips before it reaches this.Quote:

I will be doing a full Budget and Mid range roundup sometime this month - I'll post it when its done! I will be doing mainly internal cards (CMedia to Audigy2 - yes, this is gonna be alot of MP3, DVD watching, hehez) I'll also be sticking the RealTek and Nvidia chips along with various other CMedia onboard chips!
:( I came across a great one the other day, it was about a partic KT600 IIRC but included at least 6 KT600 mobos and showed all offering diff goodies, many diff sound chips used inc VIA's new VT1616 chip. Basically some of them (though most weren't) were close to nForce2 Soundstorm for CPU usage but quality though better was still no where near. Great review ... can I find it now. NO! I spent ages just trawlign around fo rit without success, tried MSN and Google. AH well, here's something at least.

EDIT: Guess what, I found it! Checking history was the simplest way (oops). Here you go ...

X-bit labs here to help you out with this review and this review.
how good is the onboard sound on the nf2 shuttle the sn45g i think? uses a realtek chip
 Unless an nForce2 specificly states it uses nVidia's audio chip or Soundstorm it won't, they'll boast about it any chance they get. Rightly so too, it makes a big diff as it escalates you from the usual 'passable' onboard audio to the dizzy heights of top consumer sound. I don't know about the SN45G but just check to see if it states it uses SS / nVidia audio, sound won't be bad without it, simply average.
