SFF's with two com ports.

Hey guys - having a bit of a fight to find any shuttle/SFF machine with two com ports and still generally available anymore. Need two com ports to run tills in shops.. need SFF to fit into the tills

Can anyone help me out and name any that are available to order?

How about just getting a real hardware serial port card?

I think some of the s754 Shuttles had them, but only on the models with no integrated graphics. Otherwise its back to SoA days when they did have them (but still more than enough power to run a till)

Most USB-serial adaptors won't work with anything more complex than a serial mouse.

I believe the Socket A SK43G will do it, and cheap too. Probably harder to find the Semperons to go in them than the shuttles these days!

Would have to buy any spares up front though, I can't see them staying in the shops for long.

A cash drawer is less complex than a mouse (drop DTR to release the drawer) so they might well be good enough.

It may work then.

I was using them reading serial data and with the USB ones only 1 out of the 7 we tried worked (and that was supplied with the instrument)

PCI is easier as there is no conversion going on.

Yeah, currently using SK43's, getting hard to find nowadays. I did find a viable s754 alternate, though, in a biostar (iirc) SFF machine

As for USB, they just don't work reliably for some reason. The reason I can't use PCI is that irritatingly the one pci slot free on a shuttle is used by a modem.

So, yeah, it has to be shuttle sized and it has two have two com ports. Pain in the arse, really

Perhaps you could build something around a mini ITX board? One port on the back, one header on the board to get a cable for.

I have found that USB serial ports often get asigned high port numbers, which a lot of software can't cope with.

Another problem, is that if you have several of these devices, their order changes each time you reboot, or reconnect them.

Have you checked if your shuttle has COM port headers on the motherboard?, if so you should be able to use a £10 adaptor connected to a PCI backplate, or elsewhere on the case with a bit of metalwork.

Why not get a USB modem and then a PCI card for the comm ports
