it all depends what you want to do with it. looking at the specs of your current system, its not exactly slow
are you looking to go AMD dual core or intel? you can pick up an AMD dual core for cheapness nowadays, and a pretty good spec one as well. depends how much you want to spend.
I'm in a similar boat.
Ask yourself how many applications do you use regularly that can benefit from dual core right now (ie not with a planned update to a game that'll give you a couple more fps).
For me it's video editing, but i'm still not jumping right now due to finances.
You also want something that will be at least as powerful in single threaded games/applications right now, and that means a minimum 2.4Ghz A64 X2 in my book (with 1MB cache for each core to get that 'opteron' smugness).
That means an A64 4800+, for a shade under £200.
Ask yourself if slightly zippier windows browsing is worth £200. It's not for me right now.

Yup, if you want to go dual core 'just for the hell of it', then buy a cheap S939 X2.
If you have serious needs for intensive number-crunching, then you may want to look at conroe......but for CPU, Mobo and RAM its going to be VERY pricey, especially with DDR2 prices going through the roof at the moment.

You know what guys, your right, I dont need it, just that bloody "upgrade addiction" kicking in and for what...a few fps. And all the encoding I do is batched over night.....
Thanks for kincking me back down...I needed that!

My stance is that I won't upgrade until enhanced/quad core AM2 comes out next summer so I can compare benchmarks with Core2.
Helps keep the addiction in check, one upgrade step at a time
In the mean time I'm trying to convince myself I don't *need* to upgrade my 6600GT... which is significantly harder![]()
