DDR2 memory

hey guys, i am in the market for some DDR2 my budget is around £200 and i am basically clueless as to what to buy. i know i will be getting the asus P5B-Deluxe and an e6600 processor.

so i want to achieve the highest possible overclock (so need good ram)

any suggestions>?

and as much as it pains me to even mention their name...the sheisters from stoke have some corsair 6400 on offer for 170, which is a damn good price at the moment. it also works great with your cpu and mobo

I found that finding and selecting memory for my new system was one of the most difficult things.

I have just bought a p5b deluxe and found the forums at extremeysystems to be really useful regarding RAM.

I ended up buying some matched G.Skill CAS4 DDR2-6400 from Overclockers who delivered it immediately without issue.

Haven't built the system yet but all the bios settings etc are on the forums at Extremesystems posted by a G.Skill tech.

Although Corsair RAM has a good reputation personally I think its expensive and a little disappointing that Scan don't have a better selection as I would have like to have bought my RAM from them with the rest of my system.

Pie, send them an email and ask them when they will be getting new stock, if i was you i would pre-order these before prices change, my Team ram has been sitting on my desk for 4 months patiently waiting for my conroe system

ok, its pc2-5300, its out of stock, and its more expensive than the ram i suggested, ill keep my eyes open for more like that.

I noticed earlier that Microdirect has some Geil 6400 on offer for £187-99, if that is compatible.

This stuff is dynamite, if you could read the article above - it will show what it is all about, pie stated he wanted the maxium potential overclock at a resonable price.

Its £20 difference which im sure pie would be able to stretch to for something that can do amazing speeds to ddr2 modules that cost in excess of £250+

My point here would be that while the sticks that are on XS have reached those high speeds, the ram is rated as pc2-5300, and as you well know, no overclock is guaranteed, and should those sticks decide to run at pc2-5300, thats what he will have to put up with.

cheers for that info guys, well i liek the look of corsair stuff and gskill. yes ino that memory clocks like mad on XS but not every memory is the same

i have heard good things about super talent memory any thoughts?

when it comes to the boil, ill get what ever is easiest to obtain, for example i have looked everywhere that sells super talent memory with no luck, and there are just 100's of corsair ddr2 stick, i am stuck as to which pair to get

i need memory with "fat boy chips D9" apparently these clock the best

i brought the 1gb kit not more than 5-6 ago and since then it's in excess of £30 more than i paid for it, makes me happy i got it when i did, although i wish i had pushed the bout a bit and got the 2gig kit

At the £200 price point there is no contest with the Team Xtreme, especially if you'd like some overclocking capability. Consider the price compared to a 'known' brand name with the same chips (say OCZ), Team are offering a bargain.

2Gb Team DDR2 PC2-6400 Xtreem Micron 4-4-4-10 Dual Channel kit £201.74 + ~£3.50 delivery.

Second choice would be the G.Skill PK Series, but I have no idea what they're capable of overclocking wise.

If you order from memory-configurator, it's best to do so through the .com site (prices shown in euros, but they are the same). This is running on a new snappy server, whereas the .co.uk site is running on an old server due for retirement - I had a rather good conversation with one of their staff who was manning the msn account whilst their server went down.

Personally I think the price of DDR2 currently is disgusting. I shall continue to cope with my 939 systems until the price drops, and more motherboard options are available for Conroe .

How many people usuing an E6600 and PC-6400 RAM are actually going to *overclock* their RAM?

My understanding is that in order to take this RAM above its rated speed with an E6600 you will need FSB in excess of 400 Mhz, with the x9 multiplier (unless you drop it) gives a CPU speed of 3600 Ghz.

I doubt most people will get this far with their CPU, in my case if I can get 3 Ghz I will be happy. PC-5400 would be OK for this anyway?

If this is correct then most of us with E6600 and PC-6400 are unlikely to need to overclock our RAM.

I guess you can use a RAM multiplier to increase your RAM speed independently if you want but from what I've read you get minimal benefit.

Please put me right if I'm wrong about this!

Overclockers have 2GB pair Geil 4-4-4-12 DDR2-800 in their This Week Only section for £180-something.

It's the same stuff they promoted a few weeks ago, I got it then and it seems fine. The SPD is set as DDR2-533 5-5-5-15 though, so you have to manually set it in the BIOS.

(Which does make me wonder if they are actually 533 sticks that are just capable of 800 4-4-4-12 and so sold as such)
