Got a Terabyte Maxtor OneTouch III on my lap, which has a dir in it which is refusing to delete.
I've tried:
- Taking Ownership
- Dos Delete
- Unlocker
- WinPE
Im now downloading Mandrake to see if I can do it that way, though does anyone know anything else I could try?
Could you not take the rest of the data off the disk, then perform a low level format (ie Completely erase the disc) and put the data back on?

EDIT- as it is an external disc, have you tried deleting it from another PC?
Knoppix is best for that kind of stuff. Or some other Live distro. Saved my life quite a few times when I've gone something stupid :-)
Have you tried doing with 'explorer.exe' closed?
Open a DOS box, close explorer.exe with task manager, delete the file, then start explorer again from the run box.
I had the same problem, but only found out about the explorer trick recently as i never has any problems with just using a DOS cmd window before.
If those which you have tried dont work or this, the disk might be faulty? Have you used chkdsk or checked the FAT?

Giving it a go now. Though its a folder with folders & files going quite deep.
Done a CHKDSK and FAT is ok.

go into the folder and delete the files in it, working your way back up the tree - that sometimes works.
After you took ownership did you remember to add your account to the permissions and give it full control? Taking ownership on its own doesn't give you file permissions, just the ability to change them.

just burning mandrake now.
Download procxp and do a search for the folder. It will probably be involved in some sort of process somwhere. Close it and it should delete fine. Had this many a time.
Its unlikely as its an external disc. But im prepared to try everything.

argh... has this HDD got the friday feeling? i'm acknowledging that it could be easier to remove the good docs, format, and put back. however, Its now at the stage where I want to do it the 'right way'! because its proving challenging!

mandrake mounts it but cant open it :s
run a chkdsk on it, might be an inode fault.
done chkdsk, will set another one.
the problem here is going to be, if i need to drag off, format and drag back.
as theres 800gb in use. we dont have a spare 800gb free anywhere

I've had good results using Heidi Eraser on hard to shift directories.
Promising, looks a little too powerful if done wrong. (I dont need to kill all the data)
35 passes. Christ, I finish at 5 and its a TB HDD
