Mid range Laptop for Parents 2

It is that dreaded time again my parents are buying a new pc. this time they want a laptop (an area which I ahve little experiance in) They ahve the folowing criteria:

17" Screen
DVD RW
They don't play games
Edit a lot of photos and watch films
Budget is about £1000 although less is fine

At the moment I am lenaing twoards either a Rock Pegasus (£899) or a Sony Vaio (£1081)

Any advise would be much apreciated

Or how about the Samsung M70 LWM 750 ? Only a P-M 750, but the 19" detachable widescreen might come in useful for films, working w/photos etc.

That sort of money should get you a decent laptop. Might be worth seeing if Dell have any good deals on. Spec wise, maybe look for 512Mb of RAM and a 60Gb+ Hard disk. I wouldn't worry too much about processor speed since your parents don't look to be doing anything too demanding on it. Personally I think you could get away with spending less than £850. The Dell InspironTM 9400 looks good value at £749 - worth researching into i think.

good deals are one thing, i see more dell laptops here at my work where we fix pcs than any other brand plus the screens are shocking and they are too big, bar that they are spiffing. i like the one above

on board video (such as most intel-based laptops) is adequate, but if watching films really is an issue something with either ATI or nVidia may given very slightly better visual quality and reduced overheads for decoding etc.
Not something that that I could honestly say would sway me much, but i'd pay in the region of £30 to £40 more for better video. No more though.
