My BIOS loses 1 bit of info ..but only 1

Hiya PC hardware dudes ;)

Im mid way through murdering/building a Soltek XP Nforce2 barebones and all bar a few Bill Gates situ's its all OK.

When I power off and unplug, and then reboot, the BIOS is totally OK and remebers all my settings....

EXCEPT the one for FAN SPEEDS.....and as I want it at max fan speed on the CPU, as it gets a wee bit hot other wise, it leaves me with an error message, asking me to reboot and reset my overclocked settings...

and all I have to reset is the fan speed back up to FAST, and not silent!

Anyidea people.....the CMOS holds all the other settings...so gues not a battery.

Moby just rang me and agrees its unlikely to be the battery...

I aint got balls of steel to do the old BIOS flash, and its not like my ASUS with Windows flashable software (I LOVE THAT:))

Odd, I wonder if it's a bug in the bios..

Ill check...but BIOS flashes scare me to death :eek:

Lots of new BIOSes let you flash that puppy from with in the BIOS setup itself.

Download the latest BIOS, copy to floppy, boot up, enter BIOS, see if you can upgrade the BIOS, if so, it normally looks on the floppy for new bin file, asks if you want to flash, say yes, reboot, enter BIOS, change settings, save, reboot....

My MSI is just as bad with VDIMM - thats because the **** engineer's didnt know how to implement it...

Zak - It just needs a reboot ;)
Failing that i'd say a bios upgrade is VERY sensible, i've found in my experience that smaller SFF pc's are much more sensitive to not having the latest bios on them.

I'd make sure you are up to date if i was you.

kk.....but BIOS scares the pants out of me :(

I've plugged the heatsink fan into another spare header, that isnt effected by BIOS....its now squealing its nuts off, but at least its safe.

Rock steady too........its also reading the CPU temp from inside the chip as well as the one in the middle of the socket :)

Its quite a good bit of kit actually...well pleased.

Still....even with a fresh XP install on a new 60gb Maxtor with an 8mb cache and a 7200 spindle speed....

it aint a patch on SCSI for game boot up ;)
