    Question Mid-spec Rig Build

    Hi all,

I need to put together a new rig for myself as the old one is going to a new home, these are the parts I have researched and compiled so far:

Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 775, 2.4 GHz, 1066MHz FSB, Conroe Core, 4MB Cache, Retail
    ASUS P5B Deluxe/WiFi-AP iP965, S775, PCI-E (x16), DDR2 533 667 800, SATA II, SATA RAID, ATX
    GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC5300 667MHz Value DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GX22GB5300DC) (MY-034-GL)
Coolermaster Mystique 631 Black Aluminum Case w/o PSU
    600w Seasonic S12-600 SLi Ready Silent PSU 2xPCI-E 4xSATA 120mm Fan ATX1.3/2.01
    320Gb Seagate ST3320620AS Barracuda 7200.10, SATA300, 7200 rpm, 16MB Cache, NCQ
    256MB Sapphire Radeon X1900 GT PCI-E (x16) 1200MHz GDDR3 GPU 575MHz 36 Pipes CrossFire
NEC ND-5170A-0B Black x18 DVD±RW Dual Layer DVD-Writer OEM UK

Don't think I've missed anything essential (soundcard, better hsf will be added later) this comes to around £900 which is really the top end of what I want to spend. I don't plan to overclock, hence the cheaper memory and more money put on the cpu.

As for usage - pretty typical I guess - I play the usual fps, rts games etc and edit the odd dvd, films, music etc.

So, how does the spec look and will it all work in harmony? Is there anything I could cut back on without dramatically affecting performance? Finally, is this reasonably future proof? - say if wanted to upgrade in a couple of years time

    any help/suggestions much appreciated.

Looks like a nice setup to me

You would probably get away with using the 500w seasonic which is on SCAN today only for about 70 quid. Depends how far into the future you plan to keep the 600w for?

I have personally gone for a samsung spinpoint over a seagate as they are reviewed as very quiet. For the same reason you may want to think about getting the HIS x1900gt

Otherwise good luck and let us know how you get on!

    Great spec,

You could shave a few quid off by going to an 500W Seasonic. But apart from that everything looks good.

    I would get a 7950GT 512mb, much better performance.

    Thanks.

    Thanks for the responses.

Downgrading the psu sounds a sensible idea. To get a better idea of power usage, I've just filled in my spec here (extreme.outervision.com/PSUEngine), it reckons around 350w psu will be needed, which I guess is peak usage. That would still leave 150w for future upgrades with the 500w model - should be plenty.

I've bought samsung drives in the past, usually for their quietness, but are they much slower than the Seagates? I'll have a couple of silentmaxx enclosures left over from my last system so I can use them if necessary, assuming they're compatible with the case.

Looks like a very nice system.
Get either the Seagate 10 series or the Samsung spinpoints (they have just come out with a T series that look great).

Well, thought I would post a quick update. Bought all the kit and put it together last Friday, here's what I ended up with eventually:

    - Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 775
    - ASUS P5B Deluxe/WiFi-AP iP965, S775, PCI-E (x16), DDR2 533 667 800, SATA II, SATA RAID, ATX
    - GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC5300 667MHz Value DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GX22GB5300DC) (MY-034-GL)
    - Coolermaster Mystique 631 Black Aluminum Case w/o PSU
    - Corsair HX520 PSU (Modular)
    - 320Gb Seagate ST3320620AS Barracuda 7200.10, SATA300, 7200 rpm, 16MB Cache, NCQ
    - 256MB HIS ICEQ Radeon X1900 GT PCI-E (x16)
    - NEC AD-7170A Black x18 DVD±RW Dual Layer DVD-Writer OEM UK
    - Zalman 9500 HSF LED
    - X-Fi Xtreme Music sound card

With the additions/changes to my above spec in bold. Decided to go for the 6300 allendale in the end so I could get the sound card and HSF, I think it was a worthwhile sacrifice. Came in at just under my £900 target.

I'm pretty happy with it, the case looks good and temps are much better than with my cramped old CM201 with P4 3ghz, probably partly down to the CPU change, but the modular PSU really makes a difference! The Mystique is build is certainly less solid but the quality is still there and its very quiet.

Unfortunately the GFX card is being RMA'd atm due to severe artifacting at stock, but I guess we can't have it all

From your component choices I can guess where you got them from.. good luck with the RMA

Most of it was from scan, although the Gfx card was from OCUK (I take it they have a bad rep in these parts ). Anyway we shall see.
