    AMD 64 FX-70, 72, 74 and newly binned AMD X2 6000+...

    AMD's 4x4 platform and AMD 64 X2 6000+

    What say you?

I feel the 4x4 platform will be a very very big hole in the wallet..

however, the 4x4 represents “performance at any cost” approach, which should dethrone the Intel Core 2 Duo and Extreme processors.
uh....any cost to the end user or the manufacturer?

also, any mention of new s939 chips? or have they had there day now?

will they allow DDR2 800, as socket F stuff is normally limited to 667 speeds

All the current X2 AM2 cpu's support 800, and the FX's even support DDR2 1066, so there's no reason to belive that these would be any different at the moment.....

this four times four business appears to be a dual socket F arrangement, i.e. the new Opteron which is currently limited to DDR667

Its a sad state of things when you have to use a 4*4 core chip to beat a competitors dual core especially as Intel are showing off there quad core now.

Not true IMO.. 4x4 will allow scalability and the integration of other critical components into HT when Torrenza comes common..

Also, with 4x4 (even though chips are to be sold as pairs), there are possibilities that you only add in extra when you really need it. Given also that the 4x4 will support 8 DIMMs, this makes excellent platform for true multithreaded applications. You can have say an Ageia chip accessing it own set of DIMMs and away from the system memory. Also, having connected through HT means there's little latency between the FPU of Ageia to the CPU which governs them all..

On the contrary, C2Q will still need to go thru the very same FSB as every Intel chip and gone thru.. and lacks the flexibility of 4x4 when you consider ATI and such will be producing co-processors to fit into Torrenza..

Apparently Intel has come up with something similar to Torrenza, though a little less elegant IMO..

depends what the competition is like, Quad will probably be 400 quid to start off with going down to 250 when AMD feels the heat of competition, just like dual core.

and they are waiting ages for it because they don't have the yield on the process yet which is another reason why four cores will be more expensive

Now if intel wants the preformance crown they just need to use hyper-transport. I guess marketing wouldn't allow it, though you never know since we live in a world where Mac use intel chips and Dell will sell you an AMD box.

Edit: Just read the article more carefully and I would guess the socket F FX procesors would just be normal FX processors with extra hyper-transport links. That allows for multipocessing without ECC and slow memory speeds, of course an overflowing wallet is still a must.

nice to see amd thinking of the little guy with its performance at any cost

gonna lose alot of us to intel if they can't match the price and performance of core 2

Unfortunately skt 939 have had their day

but its not a bad time to pick up a skt939 system IMO just because they are being sold extremely cheap in some places so they can make room for AMD's AM2 processors

that will come in 2008 when Intel introduce CSI.

Isn't it on the allways late timescale. As I recall they have been promising it for awhile.
