    Dell GX620 Core2 compatable?

Right question for you know-alls out there. I have a Dell GX620 which has a Pentium D in it at the moment. It did have a P4 3Ghz chip in it which I changed for the D. What I am wondering is since they are the same socket do you think it is possible to get a Core2 to run in my machine?

Any opinions or am I being very hopeful?

You need to check the version of the Intel chipset that you have on the board.

    Wikipedia says (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_Core_2):

Conroe, Conroe XE and Allendale use Socket LGA775; however, not every motherboard is compatible with these products.

    Supporting chipsets are Intel's: 865PE, 945P/PL/G, 955X, 975X, P/G/Q965, Q963, 946GZ/PL (Note that 865PE support 800 MHz FSB QDR while the processors are using 1066 MHz FSB QDR); ATI's Radeon Xpress 200, RD600 and RS600; NVidia's nForce 4 SLI Intel Edition and nForce 570/590 Intel Edition; and VIA's PT880/PT880 Ultra, PT890, PM880 and PM890.

Right having huge difficulty here, I can't get anything more precise than the fact that it has a 945 express chipset. Is that one of the 945P/PL/G chipsets? Or something completely different? Thanks for the help though.

Edit: Just googled it and it seems that they have a 945g. Dell's site was completely unhelpful. In that case I think I may order myself a rather nice 6400

Please double check all version numbers, you can check chipset version details on Intel's website. Please don't base your decision just on my input, don't really want to be responsible for you buying a chip you can't use...
