    Socket A/462 compatibility

    Good Evening

I got given an AMD AthlonXP 2600+ today, to replace my current 1700+, they're both Socket A CPU's, so I popped out the 1700 (and bugger me, those heatsinks are hell to get off, so sore!) and put in the 2600, and powered up only to find the HD light constantly on, and no POST beeps, or any beeps of disagreement.

Nothing appeared on the screen either.

Are there some later Socket A CPU's that dont like playing ball with earlier BIOSes etc, or did I make some silly mistake when installing it?

    Cheers,
    David

    It is indeed.

Update, with old CPU back in (1700), sister has just had the machine go a bit odd - video output stops and the HD light goes solid on and reset button wont work - any ideas?

Could be you need to clear the CMOS - get it to reset to default settings. Otherwise is the board (& memory) capable of the new (possibly increased) fsb?

Tried CMOS clear, I'm gona try and update the BIOS tomorrow morning and see what happens.

RE the FSB issue, good point - the 1700 has an FSB of 133, and the 2600 i've been given has a 166Mhz FSB, just checking to see what the motherboard supports justnow...

Edit: the mobo manual states "supports upto 400Mhz FSB"

That site says it supports both 266/333
    Check for jumper fsb settings

Had a quick look in mobo manual and the board itself, no obvious jumpers...'jumped' out at me, but i'll have a more in depth look after sister has been on and stopped bitching at me

Socket A HSF's - can they only go on one way? I'm gonna try mounting it the other way round and see if it makes a difference, im pretty sure its on the way it was before though - it's just because theres already thermal paste on the HSF, so if its on the wrong way it might not be making a decent contact.

Installed MBM to check temps, but they're varying from -115 to 123 degrees!

Yes, it's possible to fit the HSF 180 degrees out. Make sure the step on the HSF corresponds with the stop on the zif socket. Also, there were a few 2600s - some ran at 133 & some at 166.

I think the fsb setting is in the bios, even so the 2600 should have ran at 133
    Sounds like a duff chip.

Hmm, perhaps it got damaged in transit - it came out of a working machine, and I took it home in an Anti-Static bag.

However, the symptoms I got when I had it in the machine were identical to what happened with this chip once, I just left it for a few hours and it seemed to sort itself.

I might try sticking it back in tonight and if it doesn't boot i'll leave it all night and try in the morning.

edit: could it be that my PSU can't supply enough power, its an unbranded (it has "arianet" printed on the sticker, assuming thats the 'brand') 300w one, which is terrible I know.

I'll see if I can get hold of a better PSU at somepoint, even if its just a 400w unbranded one, which might help...

What kind of ram do you have? If you have ddr266 ram and its trying to run it at ddr333 it may not be feeling the love.

    I have 2x 256MiB PC2700 and 1x 256Mib PC3200 - I assume because of that combo, it will all be running at 166Mhz?

With Socket A you should always run your RAM at the CPUs FSB.....if you run the RAM faster you end up with an unstable system.

So force the RAM speed to 133 with the old CPU or 166 with the new one.

Just because hes got some PC3200 in there it wont "run the RAM faster". The memory will automatically align itself with the speed of the chips fsb. So 166 in this case. That was the trouble with socket A, the memory and chip fsb was always 1:1.

It sounds like the chip is messed up to me. Try putting the 2600 in and setting the bios up to match the chips spec i.e. clock speed, fsb. Also try running the chip with the PC2700 memory only and then the PC3200 only - it shouldnt be causing a problem as the PC3200 and PC2700 will be running at 133 (PC2100) with the XP1700 and at 166 (PC2700) with the XP2600, but its worth a try

I can't get into the BIOS though, when I boot with the 2600 with any of the 3 sticks of RAM (tried all 3 seperatley), all I get is the HD light on solidly and no video output and no beeps at all.

I think someone I know has a Socket A machine I can test it in tonight though, so if I can get it into that machine we'll see how it goes

Thanks for the help so far
