Is there such a thing?
I bought one, but it needs to have a mains adapter plugged in for it to work, so not ideal, ive seen some icy ones and they have got a mains adapter as well. Ideally, im after something that takes its power from the usb, so theres just one cable.
Its for a PATA drive and im not fussed about the colour or brand.

I have seen them but so far they have only been for 2.5" IDE drives.
EDIT: Seems like there are ones for 3.5" now, looks like they use 2 x USB for the additional power

I thought it would be easy enough to run a single PATA drive from the usb power, but obviously not. The 2 usb is definately more handy than the mains cable, but ill keep looking, theres got to be something.
I don't think that USB one is safe enough
Some harddrives like Maxtor 300G have a startup current of 2A(12V) which converts to 5A on 5V. That is 10 times the allowed current on USB. It might fry your USB port.
Laptop adapters are not meant to drive 25W of external devices too.
paid £6.50 for my 2.5" USB 2 hard drive enclosure.
3.5 enclosures need between 24 and 33 watts!!!!!
USB sockets give out 2.5 watts.
£11.50 now at ebuyer. They dont seem to be cheap for that mch these days
