For it's TDP, and power consumption the G71 is an awesome chip, but it just get a lot of bad press with all the failures on the early versions. Part of the design was to keep it in the same thermal range as the G70. Which in hindsight wasn't the best idea for the biggest numbers.

Then again a lot of people by 79** cards just to avoid the heat and noise of the X1900's. I know I did. Mines overclocked to the limit and still doesn't even reach 55c with the fan at 5v.

LOL, I've got an accelero on this beast and it loads at roughly 70oC which is actually real good for a x1900!

I dont want anything in my case dumping 70c of heat if I can avoid it. I can live without the last few huindred 3Dmarks for temps being nearly 20 degrees cooler and a hell of a lot quieter.

If I had water cooliong I would go for the ATi monster.

i want to know how much power this thing is going to use, i mean if its anything like what ATI's dx10 card will be like its time to get some solar panels just to power the PC, as its gonna suck alot of juice out the grid.

Can't wait to see the performance though, although i am a silencer at heart, i do love some good visuals (i know i only have an mx440, but im building a new computer when quad cores come out)

nice card think ill stick with X1900 for a while and wait for ATI to release a decent DX10 card

Watercooling is definately the way forward with an x1900. At stock clocks I get ~35 idle and ~45 load and then with the vcore at max ~55c.

I think the future of graphic card is going to be like in a seperate unit with it's own PSU and cooling system, something like the one shown at nvidia website. I mean they are simply getting too big and too hot these days to be housed in a midi tower system which I believe majority of people still use. I think one of the original idea behind making GPU multi was to reduce/diffuse the amount of heat generated by single chipset, but that has made the card physically bigger and they often block the airflow when put inside a case so it's not working as it should be. So in my opinion unless GPU company came up with kickass new manufacturing technology to produce low heat, low power consumption chipsets, future of the GC is going to be like seperate GU(graphic unit). And I personally prefer things would go this way because I don't want to buy a new PSU and bigger case everytime new card is released

I agree they really need to bring down the heat out put of these cards, surely they can implement some kind of clock gating like amd and intel have? anyways no big deal for me i got watercooling

Also these are 90nm parts right? - so i imagine that the 8900 will be 65nm perhaps i hope so, that would bring down the power and heat issues

    around 70 its shocking

Your a bit confused Sawyen. These 128 shaders aren't the s ame thing as what were used to, and cannot be compared. It's a whole new Generation of card.

We will have to wait and see some game benchies to see how much better it is in DX9 games.

The worrying things are heat and power consumption of the new cards, from Nvidia and ATI.

Wow, I can't believe they've actually released some official info, nVidia have been unbelieveably tight-lipped about this one.

Very strange memory figures though, I think the physics processing theory best explains them. With that in mind, would the PCI express bus have a high enough bandwith for the amount of data being transferred??

Anyway, good news to hear that it is arriving soon, guess I'll just postpone my PC order until November.

yep ad-15 id wait until you can buy a card that can support dx10 at least - i wont be buying the first cards that are out for it though ill wait for the inevitable refresh, they will be quieter - cooler - more efficient and better value - they always are .............on the other hand you have to buy some time, otherwise you will never buy anything at all..... hmmz

Usually its good to wait until people either realize its a good product, or for rev. B.

You have that the wrong way around

Case temps are LOWER with the X1900/X1950, in fact mine are much lower, due to the ati design of pumping the hot air directly out of the case. I noticed this recently when my X1900 was away for repair and I swapped a 7800GT in from my spare box....case temps rose and I had to leave the side off to stop my hard drives from setting off the temnperature alarms on my raid controller. Now that the 7800GT has been booted back out, temps have dropped and no more alarms

Because the cards cooler works well, doesn't change the fact it's monsterously hot, and quite loud to push all that heat out.

Not sure what was up with your 7800GT, but mine was barely ever warm to the touch, Even overclocked. My 7950GT and it's chunky overclock lives happily at 40c and 55under load with the zalman fan at 5v.
