The layout of the NF7-S is fine in my opinion. I don't have any problems with where the IDE connectors are or anything. My Northbridge fan doesn't annoy me with it's noise (The rest of my machine must drown it out) and my sound isn't crackly without a heatsink on the Southbridge.
A top notch board in my opinion. The Nforce2 isn't really beaten in terms of performance, stability and versatility. VIA you should stay away from because of all the compatability and stability issues.
Me going from a K7S5A to NF7-S was a fair increase in overall performance
