    100% CPU Usage Constantly

When I decided to downgrade my 7900GTX my PC has gone horribly wrong. I sold it and then bought a 6800GS off here to replace it.

When it arrived one of the capacitors had broken off, I used it and it used fine but the CPU kept on getting to 100% and slowing the PC down.

So me being the wise guy I am, bought a solder off Ebay and had to break a CD player to find some solder. I did this and stuck the capacitor with much difficulty onto the card. It seems to be on but I've no idea if it's on properly.

It has made the problem a little better, but I also stupidly decided to format my hard drive to see if it was windows as a GPU and CPU seem kind of unrelated.
And stupidly again, I chose the wrong drive to format and ended up losing 100GB of various files which wasn't too great.

Anyway, that didn't help and my CPU usage keeps on going to 100%.

But it is quite random, sometimes I can leave it on for 12 hours and I can use it fine. But other times after half an hour random processes take up all the CPU, such as firefox, iTunes, Rundll etc...

Is there anything I can do to rectify this atall? Like a driver or something?

Also, would anyone happen to have a really bad, cheap PCI-E graphics card they could sell me?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

    Oh yes, my specs are:

    3800+ Venice
    2GB RAM PC3200
    Abit AN8 Ultra
    6800GS XFX
    Logitech MX3100 Combo
    Dell 20" Widescreen TFT
    Audigy 4

Think that's all that is in any terms relevant?

the 100% cpu is a known firefox problem. So this still happens after a format and reinstall of windows?

have a look on fleabay for cheap pci-e graphics cards, you can pick up a new ati one for about £15.

Firefox is annoying although mine takes up memory rather tahn CPU, odd about the capacitor though.. i don't think the direction they face makes any difference (+ or -), and if it worked before you resoldered then it shouldn't make much difference.

Just force close the apps using task manager.. should do the trick.

It does if it's an electrolytic cap, which are bigger and thus more likely to get broken off with rough handling. If you can trace the circuits you should be able to work out which end is - (ground). But I have to say I doubt that the capacitor has any bearing on your CPU usage problem.

You don't say if you've scanned for viruses, and are there any errors in the event viewer?

No, I am pretty certain that it is the graphics card. As soon as I fitted it, the computer started exhibiting the dodgy problems.

I have completely reformatted and I have no viruses or spyware atall.

It especially happens when I play videos.

Anyway, I've ordered a cheap one of scan, hopefully it should solve the problem....

Just installed the card that arrived from Scan today and it is working absolutely perfectly.

No idea why it effected the CPU usage though.

Power supply? Check in task manager and see whats using it up. I had a similar problem, a procces called "system" was using up my cpu so I stole an old power supply which made it worse therefore it must be the power supply! These things work both ways.
    With love and many thanks,

I have a process called "System Idle Process" which always seems to use 99%. Kind of annoying but at least it doesn't seem to slow the machine down.

Yes (came with case so ), and he got scared for his adored GFX card, so now he got a huge wattage Tagan PSU. Now when he turns on his PC, the lights in Southwest london flicker for a second.

My £20 Pc-World PSU, however (Q-Tec I think), does fine in my system, on which a £60 Antec died sometime ago. I guess some things just don't make sense in the world of computers.

That means your system is 99% idle..... and only using 1%. The system Idle Process is effectively a dummy process - it does not consume processor power - it simply displays what you have left unused.
Try to make each and every day the best it can be.
