    Newbie needs some help

I have finally recieved a new cpu, ive been sent the 3800+ now as my old 3500+ had bent pins so i sent it back to AMD. Im stuck though,

the power comes on and the screen displays a black screen which say the model of my motherboard, ram and then a list of things saying none apart from the secondary ide which says my dvd rom? Then it does nothing? Ive got a pic but dont know how to put it on here? the pic is not that clear but i want to show u what i meant.

what do i need to do now?

    thanks

    James

Use www.imageshack.us/ to upload a picture, i think it's explained on the site, then post one of the links it gives you on here, the site is fairly intuitive to use.

As far as your problem goes it sounds like your computer may not be recognising your hard drives, but i'm no expert, what's the rest of the system spec, are the hard drives sata or ide?

Try a Windows repair using the CD if you find your hard drive(s) are being recognized.

MMMM - So it does a full POST (Power On Self Test) which means it beeps displays the basics on the motherboard and then tries to load the OS. Do you have sound connected as most motherboards have beep codes and some even have a vioce message to tell you if anything is wrong.

From what you have said it looks like it has done the POST correctly (no extra beeps etc) but can't find the drive with the operating system installed so cannot proceed to boot. Check your jumpers and power cables on the hard drives to see if thats where the problem lies.

Is this a complete new build? Does the HD have an os or do you need to install it?. if its the latter have you set the boot device to be your CDROM and have you put the OS disk into it?

It does make some beeps, one long beep followed by two small beeps and a pause then it repeats it. The computer is a complete new build, only thing not new is the gcard and dvd rom. I dont think the hd works as it makes now sound when i turn the computer on whereas another hd i tried does. btw is ide and doesn't have an os on it. Im not too sure what i need to do atm, probs just give it to someone who knows more about them then i do.

    thanks

Presuming your motherboard has an award BIOS the beep code means that the graphics card is probably at fault see here -> http://www.amptron.com/html/bios.beepcodes.html check that the graphics card is seated correctly

Yeah if does more than the the initial beep you've got a POST problem so the bios wont let you go any further. Look at the link given by kasavien or have a look through your motherboard manual. Somtimes they arent the best source but it should give you a indication of where to look further and would defo give you a support website/email for you to contact if still no joy.

If Kasavien has got the correct error have a quick check of the graphics card. Is it seated correctly, is the power (if a PCI-E card) connected. Take it out brush off the card connectors (carefully) and insert it again. Clear the CMOS (guide should be in your motherboard manual) and power up again.

If that still fails..... do you have enough power (big enough PSU) for all your components it maybe that your FX card isn't getting enough juice to operate correctly.

I know its disheartening when you put a rig together and nothing works - happens to the best of us, somtimes its a hardware fault, sometimes its operator error. Stick with it you'll get there in the end.

i have sorted everything out with my computer, thanks for all the help and support, this site is great and i really appreciate it. Just one last thing, my current (old computer) does not play any sound?? It says there is no audio device attached to the computer but ive plugged the speaker into the green port on the motherboard and nothing. I used to have a seperate sound card but took that out cus it stopped working. What seems to be the problem?

    thanks

make sure you have got rid of all the drivers for your old sound card. then install the ones from your onboard sound, check that onboard sound isnt diabled somewhere in the bios and make sure that the motherboard drivers are set to having onboard sound working [look at the manual] and also check it shows up properly on device manager.
